Buffalo Chicken Meatballs (Slow Cooker) - Emily Bites

I was feeling creative this weekend and I wanted to come up with a new recipe that would be good to serve while watching football. I?ve had meatballs on the brain lately and whenever I think of football I think of Buffalo chicken, so I decided to combine the two.? I always make meatballs in the crockpot, and I figure pouring a bottle of wing sauce over these would keep them moist and help them suck up the Buffalo flavor. The meatballs are a mixture of everything you?d find on a plate of wings: chicken, carrots, celery and blue cheese. I thought they featured those flavors really well and were a perfect warm, hearty dish for cheering on your team from the couch.

I served these a la carte with a dish of light blue cheese dressing for drizzling and they went over really well. I think they?d also be great on a sub or served over pasta with some blue cheese dressing or light alfredo mixed in. Get creative and let me know how you serve them!

Buffalo Chicken Meatballs
Source: Emily Bites Original

Ingredients:
1 lb ground chicken breast (if you can?t find breast meat only you can grind your own chicken breasts in a food processor)
1 medium carrot, chopped finely in a food processor (or shredded on the small side of a box grater)
1 medium stalk of celery, chopped finely in a food processor (or shredded on the small side of a box grater)
? cup plain dried breadcrumbs
2 eggs
Splash of skim milk (about 2 T)
1 t garlic powder
1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese
12 oz bottle of Buffalo wing sauce (such as Frank?s Red Hot Buffalo Wings Sauce)

Directions:
1.??? In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients except wing sauce until thoroughly combined. Use your hands to form the mixture into 12 equal sized balls.
**My slow cooker has a detachable pot that rests on a heated base. If your crock pot is all attached and the pot is not removable, complete step one in a heavy pot on the stove and then transfer contents to crock pot for step two**
2.??? Mist the inside of your crock pot (or other pot) with cooking spray and brown the meatballs on all sides on the stove top. Do not cook all the way through.
3.??? Transfer pot (or contents of pot) back onto your crock pot base and pout the wing sauce over the top. Stir meatballs to coat. Turn crock pot temperature to low and cover. Cook for 7-8 hours.

Serving Suggestions: I liked these meatballs a la carte with a little light blue cheese dressing drizzled over the top, but the possibilities are endless. You can serve them as an appetizer or as a meal. You can make them into a sandwich or sub or serve them over pasta. Let me know how you eat yours!

Yields 12 meatballs. WW P+: 2 per meatball (P+ calculated using the recipe builder on weightwatchers.com)

Minn. man found passed out on Wis. Capitol dome

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Police say a Minnesota man who broke into the Wisconsin Capitol through a fifth-floor window and was found unconscious on the dome's roof has been charged with felony criminal damage.

A criminal complaint accuses 21-year-old Andrew Bishop of scaling the outside of the Capitol on Sunday and smashing a window to get into the building. It says the intoxicated Roseville, Minn., man grabbed a fire extinguisher and threw it through another window.

The complaint says police found Bishop passed out on a dome outside one of the windows. It says Officer Justin Wichman described Bishop as very drunk and ultimately apologetic.

The State Journal (http://tinyurl.com/95zffg7 ) reports Bishop is charged in Dane County with felony criminal damage and entry into a locked building. He's being held on $1,000 bond.

Foreclosures Split America - Real Estate Economy Watch

September?s foreclosure data showed America has become bipolar over foreclosures, with dramatic decreases in most states but increases nearly as great in judicial states where lenders are speeding up processing of defaults.

Foreclosure activity nationwide fell to the lowest level in five years in but increased in 14 judicial states, including Florida, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey and New York as lenders begin to move on backlogged defaults after processing standards fully implementing the Attorneys General agreement take effect.

The national decrease in September marked the ninth consecutive quarter with an annual decrease in foreclosure activity and helped drop the third quarter foreclosure numbers to the lowest level since the fourth quarter of 2007. Foreclosure filings for the quarter decreased 7 percent from August and 16 percent from September 2011.? Third quarter filings were down 5 percent from the second quarter and 13 percent from the third quarter of 2011, according to RealtyTrac.

In the West, declines were even more dramatic.? In California, notices of defaults were down 20.7 percent from the prior month, and down 48.1 percent compared to last year. In Arizona, new foreclosures were down 37.1 percent, in Nevada down 40.1 percent, down 40.0 percent in Oregon and Washington saw new foreclosures fall 31.2 percent from August.? Sales are also down with Arizona down 24.3 percent, Nevada down 19.5 percent, Oregon down 0.3 percent, and Washington down 33.5 percent from the prior month, ForeclosureRadar reported today.

Third quarter foreclosure activity increased on a year-over-year basis in New Jersey (130 percent increase), New York (53 percent increase), Indiana (36 percent increase), Pennsylvania (35 percent increase), Connecticut (34 percent increase), Illinois (31 percent increase), Maryland (28 percent increase), South Carolina (16 percent increase), North Carolina (14 percent increase), and Florida (14 percent increase). ?Among judicial states foreclosure activity in the third quarter decreased on annual basis in Massachusetts (16 percent decrease) and Wisconsin (12 percent decrease).

However, more foreclosures may be in store.? ?It was recently reported that the nation?s five largest mortgage servicers have implemented all of the 320 servicing standards required under the national mortgage settlement.? The continued decline in Foreclosure Starts clearly shows that even though servicers are now apparently in compliance and clear to move forward with foreclosures, they are still in no rush to foreclose on the majority of delinquent borrowers,? said Sean O?Toole, founder & CEO of ForeclosureRadar.

However, processing time actually increased durinmg the quarter to a national average of 382 days to complete the foreclosure process, up from 378 days in the previous quarter and up from 336 days in the third quarter of 2011. It was the highest average number of days to foreclose since ?the first quarter of 2007.

The average time to complete a foreclosure increased substantially from a year ago in several states where recent legislation and court rulings have extended the foreclosure process. These states included Oregon (up 62 percent to 193 days), Hawaii (up 62 percent to 662 days), Washington (up 62 percent to 248 days) and Nevada (up 42 percent to 520 days).

The average time to foreclose decreased from a year ago in 15 states, including Arkansas (down 49 percent to 199 days), Michigan (down 15 percent to 226 days), Maryland (down 9 percent to 541 days), California (down 8 percent to 335 days), and New Jersey (down 4 percent to 931 days).

New Jersey documented the second longest state foreclosure timeline in the third quarter behind New York, where the average time to complete a foreclosure was 1,072 days for properties foreclosed during the quarter. Florida registered the third highest state foreclosure timeline, 858 days - down slightly from 861 days in the previous quarter - and Illinois registered the fourth highest state foreclosure timeline, 673 days.

Grits and Grace: 31 Days Embracing Motherhood: When You're Not ...

Everyday I make a thousand tiny decisions. ?Some are big and affect more than just the faces around my dinner table at night. Most aren't.

Most of my decisions like what to have for dinner, which coupon deals to grab, how to style Amelia's hair are simple choices I make everyday and can usually do without a lot of advice.

But sometimes...sometimes I need to know I'm not the only one struggling with how to decide what's best for ?my family. ?I need to know I'm not alone in my quest to have my kids eat more vegetables, my baby sleep through the night, my jeans to fit again.

One of my great blessings of motherhood is my mommy friends. ?Lately, friendships aren't defined by the years we've known each other, the schools we may or may not have attended together, the church where we fellowship. ?Instead, I find my best and closest friends right now have toddlers who are delighted to be tinkling on the potty, first graders who sometimes venture past "green is good", or babies who prefer their milk straight from the source and 98.6 degrees, thank you very much.

We're friends because we empathize, we totally 100% get why there is Pop-Tart on your shoulder and spit up on your shoes, and we DVR shows on girls' nights so we can wait until everyone has put the kids to bed before getting together. ?We're friends because we'll share a homemade casserole or a really good bottle of wine when someone's having a bad day and sometimes even when they're not.

We're friends because motherhood brought us to each other.

And as I get older and farther from the person I was in high school or college, I find myself coming back full circle to those friends who mattered so much then. Now my facebook message account fills with group messages from girls I shared dorms and cafeterias with, girls whose closets I've ransacked, girls who knew me when I was going to change the world in an inner-city school.

Girls who now have two year olds and pregnant bellies and questions about vaccines and breastfeeding and carseats. ?So now we're more than roommates and alumni, we're mothers together.

It's a blessing to share the journey.

Friend, I hope you have someone to share your motherhood trials and tribulations with, but if you don't, I hope you'll visit here often and drop me a line or two about how I can support you. ?

For all my 31 Days posts venture over here.

Saber Junction Reflects Post-Afghanistan Training Model

Saber Junction Reflects Post-Afghanistan Training Model

By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9, 2012 ? An exercise under way in Germany ? the largest in more than two decades in terms of the training area committed, the scope of operations and the number of participants ? is providing a template for the way U.S. ground forces will incorporate the lessons from Iraq and Afghanistan as they train for future operations.

Saber Junction 2012 kicked off Oct. 7 and will continue through October. It brings together almost 4,000 participants from the Army?s 2nd Cavalry Regiment and 17 allied and partner nations, as well as U.S. government agencies.

Saber Junction represents a lot of firsts as it sets the stage for post-Iraq and -Afghanistan training, explained Army Lt. Col. Eric Smith, brigade observer-controller-trainer at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center.

Rather than training specifically for counterinsurgency operations -- the focus of the center?s training rotations for the past decade -- participants will conduct the full spectrum of combat operations as they also face medium- and high-intensity threats.

?The [2nd Cavalry] regiment will have to deal with enemy conventional forces that are almost as good as they are,? Smith said. ?They will have to deal with insurgents, terrorists, criminals and the population, as well as allied forces, the interagency and media. All of that will be out there, and all of it will affect the operational environment they are working in.?

This ?decisive action training environment,? referred to as DATE, is incorporated in the Army?s new unified land operations training doctrine. It?s transforming training not just at the JMRC in Germany, but also at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif., and the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La.

?The Army has decided that there are a whole lot of important lessons we have learned coming out of Afghanistan and Iraq, and we have to keep those,? Smith said. ?But we can?t just train for those environments. We have to train for something that is going to happen in the next 10 to 15 years, and that is what the DATE is.?

The hundreds of military aircraft and wheeled and tracked vehicles participating in Saber Junction require more expansive maneuver space than the Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels training areas in Germany offer. So, for the first time since the Return of the Forces to Germany exercise series ended in 1989, participants will operate across a sweeping area that encompasses not only the two training areas, but also the Bavarian villages, forests and farmland between them.

This extended maneuver rights area, more than 1,300 square miles, is only slightly smaller than the massive National Training Center in California?s Mojave Desert, said Ernest Roth, Joint Multinational Training Command?s maneuver control officer, who negotiated with the German government to get the required permissions.

?We needed a lot of area to replicate the appropriate battle space because of the mission sets the 2nd Cavalry Regiment will be called upon to execute in terms of low-, mid- or high-intensity conflict,? Roth said.

?It requires a lot of space to work the command, control and communications piece and all the digital constructs,? he explained. ?And at the same time, this gives the soldiers a variety of terrain in order for their leaders to meet certain training objectives based on realistic terrain like what they could have to fight on.?

Smith called the chance to conduct the largest U.S. maneuver exercise in Germany since 1989 vital to ensuring U.S., partner and allied countries are prepared for the future.

?It?s absolutely critical, as we move forward, to be able to do that,? Smith said. ?Because then, we really stress the units in terms of their ability to operate over distances, to communicate, to run logistics. All of those things get worked that wouldn?t if constrained to just the training areas we have.?

As they operate together during Saber Junction helping the notional oil-rich country of Atropia confront a litany of challenges, the participants forge relationships as they increase their interoperability, he said.

?We learn from each other and really get to work together under stressful, realistic circumstances,? Smith said. ?It is really fantastic to be able to bring all that together. It is something that you can?t really do anywhere else.?

Carefully constructed training scenarios are designed to force participants to stretch beyond the experiences many of them gained in Iraq or Afghanistan.

?As we look toward these threats in the future, we really have to go back and challenge some of our basic assumptions we have going in,? Smith said. ?Because we have been doing a similar mission for the last 10 years, we run the risk of assuming that this is how things are going to be for the next 10 years. But this type of environment forces people to go back and say, ?Hey, I have gotten used to doing this for a decade, and I have grown accustomed to one thing. But now I have to do something else.?

That ?something else? will continue to include interagency partners, said Jim Derleth, JMRC?s senior interagency training advisor. He was instrumental in getting seven U.S. agencies to commit representatives to the exercise, integrating their goals, capabilities and authorities into the play.

?If you don?t have the rest of the [U.S. government] involved in a DATE rotation, how can you replicate the conditions that the military will be asked to accomplish?? Derleth questioned.

Training scenarios have been designed to ensure that military participants recognize their tactical operations can?t be conducted in a vacuum, and have to support U.S. government goals, he explained. ?The question will be how this fits into the bigger context of U.S. foreign policy or U.S. national security policy,? he said.

Saber Junction, Derleth said, will help ensure that interagency cooperation strengthened during the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan continues into the future. ?We are trying not to lose those lessons,? he said. ?If we don?t keep track of the lessons of the last 10 years, we are not going to be effective.?

Warrior Forum Review ; About Internet Warrior Forum |

Many marketing programs that we have reviewed often suggest a place to join and ?hang out? is the Warrior Forum or Internet Marketing Forums.

The one we have heard most about is www.warriorforum.com.

The idea is to become a frequent member, and offer some helpful comments on different questions people may have, then as YOUR name becomes seen and TRUSTED as an authority on some online marketing subject, others will tend to follow you to your program.

Now, if you are brand new and feel you have nothing to offer, then how will this work for you to get traffic?

Well, it may not work that great.

So, we are not knocking this idea of hanging w/ the other ?successful marketers? at this or other forums, but it can be tough trying to get a following when we have minimal skills to offer.

Also, we have been online since around 2004, and we never had reason to join the forum or to use it to get traffic.

We were VERY lucky to have found a trustworthy guy that showed us some REAL traffic generating methods that still work today some 8 years later.

The reason they work is because they are based on the simple foundation that the whole internet is based on?.people searching for specific information or KEYWORDS, then offering them the EXACT info they were looking for.

The worst thing to deal with online is searching for something then finding every WRONG website in the whole internet instead of a simple site that offers simple answers.

Are you following this simple thought?

One thing we tell all new members of our top program is MOST programs DO WORK.

The problem is too many people do not learn traffic and do not work hard enough to grow the traffic that they decide to build. A couple classified ads posted once a week will get you near ZERO results for example.

This is one traffic method we start people with because it is easy to COPY?all you need to do is COPY and PASTE an ad we give you then send the ad. You won?t get a flood of traffic from one ad?but you will get opt ins and you will eventually get a sale.

==>> List Building Review

We hope this was helpful. Keep in mind there are millions of new people each day looking for a way to earn online, so there will be many at these forums that could use some help even if you know very little?so don?t hesitate to check them out, especially the Warrior Forum as they are one of the most legit and long standing sites around.

Romney arrives in Denver for debate, wins Elway's endorsement

DENVER (Reuters) - John Elway won Super Bowls. Now he's trying to help Mitt Romney win the White House.

Romney arrived in Denver Monday night, two days before his first debate against President Barack Obama, holding a rally and picking up the endorsement of Elway, the legendary Denver Broncos football player and two-time Super Bowl champion.

Elway briefly addressed the raucous crowd of more than 5,000 Romney supporters, introducing the Republican candidate and firing up the crowd with a reference to Sunday's Broncos win over the Oakland Raiders.

"I must say, today has been a very good day, not only because of what happened yesterday, but because I get the opportunity to introduce you to the next president of the United States, Governor Mitt Romney."

Romney addressed the upcoming debates, noting that "there's a lot of interest surrounding the debates, and people want to know who's going to win."

"In my view it's not so much winning or losing or even the people themselves - the president and myself - it's about something bigger than that," Romney said. "These debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for America that we could choose."

Elway, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and now a Broncos executive vice president, contributed the maximum permissible amount of money to Romney this year. Elway had also endorsed Republican candidate John McCain in the 2008 White House race - in a losing cause.

While polls in recent days and weeks have shown Romney losing support in key states, Colorado has been one of the few bright spots where he sees an opportunity to take a state Obama won in 2008.

The rally represented the first time Romney has appeared before voters since last Friday, having focused on preparing for the debate.

Kevin Madden, a senior Romney adviser, told reporters on the flight to Denver that much of the debate prep in Boston, where the campaign is based, has focused on getting the candidate used to debating one person instead of several, as he did during the Republican primary season.

Romney participated in dozens of debates during the primaries of the 2008 and 2012 campaigns. But because the Republican has never done a one-on-one presidential debate, Madden said the debate format has been central to the preparations.

"There's only one person on stage that's done three nationally televised, head-to-head debates in a general election format," Madden said. "That's President Obama. Governor Romney hasn't. So you know you try to get used to that."

While analysts say the debate has become increasingly critical for Romney's chances of winning on Election Day, Madden downplayed expectations for how Romney will perform. When asked about Chris Christie's prediction that Romney will win Wednesday night, Madden said he appreciated the New Jersey governor's optimism.

"I don't think any one event is going to dramatically alter the race," Madden said of the first debate. "I think that we'll continue to do what we can to make this race, keep it close and be in a position to win on election day."

Pinterest for Business Marketing: 6 Steps For Building Your Presence

Pinterest for Business Marketing: 6 Steps For Building Your Presence

pinterest-for-business-marketing-how-to-build-your-business-presence

Pinterest is the third most-popular social network in the U.S., behind Facebook and Twitter.? This visually focused social media marketing platform is the fastest growing social platform and has become an extremely popular channel for brands of all shapes and sizes.? This is likely the case because Pinterest is similar to a search engine, often compared to Google.? If your business is hoping to capture the attention of social users then Pinterest is a platform you must build a presence on.

STEP 1: Invitation Request

Pinterest is currently a closed social platform so if you want to participate you?ll need an invitation.? Don?t worry it?s easy to get one! There are two ways to start a Pinterest account for your business: 1) Request an invitation directly from Pinterest OR 2) Get invited by a friend who already has an account.

Requests sent directly Pinterest can take as long as several weeks before you get an invitation. Once you?ve requested the invitation you?ll be placed on the Pinterest waiting list.? This can be extremely frustrating if you?re excited to get started.? While it might not happen immediately you will eventually receive your invitation.

If you?re lucky enough to know someone who already has a Pinterest account you can get your account started almost immediately. Simply ask your friend for an invitation and you will receive an email invite to join Pinterest immediately.? Guess what!?! I have a Pinterest account and would be thrilled to help you out! Simply click here to get your Pinterest invitation right away.???

STEP 2: Create Account

Your invitation has landed in your inbox and now all you have to do is click on the link provided. After clicking you?ll be brought to Pinterest?s welcome page. The next step is to sign up with either a Facebook or Twitter account.

Remember, you are creating a business account and Pinterest is designed for personal use.? This is fine and many business are using Pinterest but you must carefully create your account knowing your focus is business and not personal. Because of this you should use Twitter, not your personal Facebook profile, when setting up your account. ??

STEP 3: 10 Pins that Fit your Businesses Personality

Step three is one of the easiest, select 10 images that fit well with your brand.? Pinterest will use these 10 images to suggest other boards and pinners who you might connect well with.

STEP 4: Create First Boards

Now comes the fun part, creating boards! These boards are where you will pin images so take time to figure out what types of boards would make the most sense and appeal to your audience. New boards can be added any time so don?t rush the process.?

STEP 5:? Build About Section

This step is extremely important. Keeping in mind that Pinterest was designed for individual use you will want to carefully walk through each step. Don?t go through the process to quickly and accidentally enter your actual name instead of the business name.? If your business is ?Power4 Consulting?enter the first name as ?Power4? and last name as ?Consulting?.?The first and last name are what appears at the top of your Pinterest account, you want to be sure the name of your business is front and center.? In addition, this is how people will find you when they enter your organizations name in the search box.

Additionally, provide a complete and accurate about section. Include your website and any other relevant social platforms or blogs.

STEP 6:? Start Pinning

It?s finally time to start Pinning.? Before you get going make sure you know the best types of images to pin, times, frequency and how to optimize all of your pins!? Consider locating similar businesses on Pinterest and check out what they?ve been doing.? I suggest not pinning more than 5 images per hour as to avoid annoying other users.

It?s not often that a new, exciting and usable social platform appears.? Early adopters will absolutely benefit and stand out their industry.

Popular antidepressant might prevent heart failure

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A medication usually used to help treat depression and anxiety disorders has the potential to help prevent heart failure, according to researchers at the University of Michigan.

John Tesmer, research professor at the U-M Life Sciences Institute and professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the U-M Medical School, and his research team at the Tesmer lab found that paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sold under the name Paxil, inhibits G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2), a protein kinase that becomes over-expressed when people have heart failure.

Although so-called "off target" effects are known for many commonly used drugs, this is the first report that identifies a direct link between a specific SSRI and a protein target in the signal system they study, said Kristoff Homan, a postdoctoral fellow in Tesmer's lab.

The paper, "Paroxetine is a Direct Inhibitor of G Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinase 2 and Increases Myocardial Contractility," was published electronically ahead of print on Aug. 21 in ACS Chemical Biology.

The discovery almost did not happen. "It was completely serendipitous," Homan said.

Before beginning a larger search for compounds that would inhibit GRK2, the researchers screened a small library of approximately 2,000 compounds that contains many FDA-approved drugs as a test of their screening procedure -- and found that paroxetine binds to and inhibits the activity of GRK2.

GRK2 becomes increasingly expressed as the system that regulates normal heartbeat and the strength of the heart's contractions weakens. Paroxetine, the team found, improved the strength of the heart's contractions in an animal model without interfering with the heart rate.

Paroxetine is FDA-approved and has been clinically used as an SSRI for nearly 30 years, but at prescribed doses the compound probably does not inhibit GRK2 enough to be used for heart failure.

But if the researchers can identify modifications to the chemical structure of paroxetine that improve potency while decreasing SSRI activity, which Homan thinks they can do, the team hopes to start the process of optimization and to develop these compounds into therapeutic leads within the next several years, he said.

IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale

In Poland, they pronounce it eye-pa, as in ?I brewed an American eye-pa.?

In Spain, it?s ee-pa.

The initials for the style otherwise known as India pale ale have taken on an international life of their own. The full title of the newest book from Brewers Publications is IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale, but look at the cover and repeat after author Mitch Steele: I-P-A.

Steele, whose day job is head brewer at Stone Brewing Co., spent more than three years working on the book. When he started IPA was the fourth best-selling craft beer style?now it?s number one. IPA sales in the U.S. increased 40 percent in 2011 and are on pace to grow that much again in 2012.

This book could hardly have arrived at a better time. Steele speaks to beer drinkers who want to know more about IPA, to homebrewers, and to commercial brewers alike. That?s because he?s all of those. In the introduction he confesses, ?I look back and realize I?ve become more of an IPA geek than I was.?

As a result, when he writes about the history of India pale ale in the first half of the book, he not only sets the story straight, but includes essential brewing details. And let?s be honest, American brewers are often guilty of repeating the myriad of myths about India pale ale. Because the book is so rich in information, breweries may even end up correcting the errors in history on their bottle labels and elsewhere.

It?s an un-rushed history, illustrated throughout with vintage drawings and photos. He also takes time to digress, for instance telling the story of how the Cascade hop quite nearly did not make it from breeding plots to farmers? fields, the rhetorical question being what that would have meant for the future of American hop-centric ales.

* Stan Hieronymus has more to share in the History of Beer section.

Conversely, the closing chapters are thick with information about ingredients and process, making it clear this is a brewing book. Nonetheless, it is presented in a way that an enthusiast who won?t bookmark page after page and otherwise ?geek out? over forty-eight recipes will gain a full appreciation of why Fuller?s 1897 IPA and Fathead?s Headhunter IPA taste so different.

In the course of his research Steele accumulated page after page of data, both old (analysis of various IPAs from the 1800s and first half of the twentieth century) and new (analysis of various craft-brewed IPAs by region, including IBUs for some of the biggest and baddest IPAs around).

He also identified the real story: ?IPA is a beer style that has gone through many drastic changes throughout its history,? he writes at the outset. ?There are at least three distinct versions of the beer.? Just as important, he has figured out how to tell that story. The only thing not clear is which shelf to put IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale on. Does it go on the one with technical brewing journals or the one with beer history books? Maybe both.

Stan Hieronymus has traveled the United States many times over while writing about beer for numerous publications. He's author of seven books, including Brew Like a Monk and Brewing With Wheat.

Pluto/Charon poses for sharpest ground-based images ever

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Despite being infamously demoted from its status as a major planet, Pluto (and its largest companion Charon) recently posed as a surrogate extrasolar planetary system to help astronomers produce exceptionally high-resolution images with the Gemini North 8-meter telescope. Using a method called reconstructive speckle imaging, the researchers took the sharpest ground-based snapshots ever obtained of Pluto and Charon in visible light, which hint at the exoplanet verification power of a large state-of-the-art telescope when combined with speckle imaging techniques.

The data also verified and refined previous orbital characteristics for Pluto and Charon while revealing the pair's precise diameters.

"The Pluto-Charon result is of timely interest to those of us wanting to understand the orbital dynamics of this pair for the 2015 encounter by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft," said Steve Howell of the NASA Ames Research Center, who led the study. In addition, Howell notes that NASA's Kepler mission, which has already proven a powerful exoplanet discovery tool, will benefit greatly from this technique.

Kepler identifies planet candidates by repeatedly measuring the change in brightness of more than 150,000 stars to detect when a planet passes in front of, or affects the brightness of, its host star. Speckle imaging with the Gemini telescope will provide Kepler's follow-up program with a doubling in its ability to resolve objects and validate Earth-like planets. It also offers a 3- to 4-magnitude sensitivity increase for the sources observed by the team. That's about a 50-fold increase in sensitivity in the observations Howell and his team made at Gemini. "This is an enormous gain in the effort underway to confirm small Earth-size planets," Howell added.

To institute this effort Howell and his team -- which included Elliott Horch (Southern Connecticut State University), Mark Everett (National Optical Astronomy Observatory), and David Ciardi (NASA Exoplanet Science Institute/Caltech) -- temporarily installed a camera, called the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument (DSSI), among the suite of instruments mounted on the Gemini telescope.

"This was a fantastic opportunity to bring DSSI to Gemini North this past July," said Horch. "In just a little over half an hour of Pluto observations, collecting light with the large Gemini mirror, we obtained the best resolution ever with the DSSI instrument -- it was stunning!"

The resolution obtained in the observations, about 20 milliarcseconds, easily corresponds to separating a pair of automobile headlights in Providence, Rhode Island, from San Francisco, California. To achieve this level of definition, Gemini obtained a large number of very quick "snapshots" of Pluto and Charon. The researchers then reconstructed them into a single image after subtracting the blurring effects and ever-changing speckled artifacts caused by turbulence in the atmosphere and other optical aberrations. With enough snapshots (each image was exposed for only 60 milliseconds or about 1/20 of a second) only the light from the actual objects remains constant, and the artifacts reveal their transient nature, eventually canceling each other out.

DSSI was built at SCSU between 2007-2008 as a part of a United States National Science Foundation Astronomical Instrumentation grant and mounted on the Gemini North telescope for a limited observing run. The instrument is likely to return to Gemini North for observations in mid-2013 for general user programs from across the international Gemini partnership. Any such arrangement will be announced along with the call for proposals for Semester 13B, in February 2013.

This work was funded in part by the National Science Foundation and NASA's Kepler discovery mission and will be published in the journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in October 2012.

Avoid Fake Debt Relief Providers | - How Important Is Your Finance

?

?Debt can turn a free, happy person into a bitter human being.?

-Michael Mihalik

After years of riding the debt train, fueled by easy credit and home-equity lines of credit, more and more families today are finally waking up and learning to take control of their finances. With the economy continuing to sputter, jobs at a premium and financial markets showing negative or lackluster growth, never before have so many Americans answered the challenge of getting themselves out of debt. The good news is there are some outstanding organizations and tools available to help families take control of their money and learn what it?s like to truly be in command of their destiny. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of scam artists and fake ?debt relief? firms out there as well.

Debt consolidation organizations fall under three categories; scam artists, for profit, and non-profit.

Scam

The first thing is to realize is these fake services come in all shapes, sizes and flavors. Many have impressive web sites full of testimonials from happy smiling couples. The claims made sound powerful. ?We owed five hundred thousand dollars! We reduced our monthly payments by 90% and paid off all of our debt in two months!?

These scammers usually want money upfront (although some will wait until later, claiming the need for ?processing fees? or ?account setup fees?)

For Profit

These are somewhat legitimate companies, which work with consumers on a debt consolidation plan. They are not flat out scams, but do try to offer a service?ordinarily for ridiculous rates.

However, the services they provide are normally not worth the prices they charge. They often suggest the consumer take on additional debt loads (why would you take on additional debt?) in the name of lowering interest rates.

While lower interest rates are good, sometimes times the real motivation of these companies is to extort their fee from the consumer. The failure rate of these companies is huge, and the Better Business Bureau gets more complaints about these types of organizations than just about any other type (except for collection agencies).

Note: There are legitimate for profit financial planners who will gladly help you devise a debt management plan. These are certified professionals. As always, check references, but these types of individuals or organizations are usually brick and mortar companies in your area locally.

Non-profit

These debt consolidation organizations normally do not charge you anything other than a small monthly fee. They are supported by the credit-card companies themselves in order to help individuals and families manage their debt and continue to pay on what?s owed. These organizations can usually negotiate to lower (sometimes eliminate) interest and work with families to put together a workable payment plan. These organizations have helped more than any other group on the list.
