LOS ANGELES ? The Emmy Awards competition will be getting fiercer among TV movie and miniseries performers.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said Thursday that it?s merging the leading and supporting acting categories for long-form programming.
Starting with the 2013 awards, new categories for outstanding actor in a miniseries or TV movie and outstanding actress in a miniseries or movie will each include six nominees. Previously, the four movie and miniseries acting categories included five nominees.

Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda's filmography (Maborosi, After Life, Still Walking) is filled with quiet, closely observed character studies about the different ways people watch out for each other. His masterpiece, Nobody Knows, carries out that plot concept to tear-jerking lengths in the story of a family of children abandoned by their mother in a Tokyo apartment, and what happens to them over time. With his latest, I Wish, Kore-eda returns to the land of kids, this time in a decidedly less tragic but just as defiantly hopeful mood.
Twelve-year-old Koichi (Koki Maeda), a pudgy boy with the deliberate demeanor of a serious middle-aged man, lives with his mother (Nene Ohtsuka) at the home of her parents in the southern Japanese city of Kagoshima, to which she and Koichi have recently moved after a divorce. Koichi's high-spirited younger brother Ryunosuke (Koki's real-life brother Ohshiro Maeda) lives in the nearby city of Hakata with their father, a guitar-strumming dreamer (Joe Odagiri). The brothers miss each other and the stability of their former family life ? even though their parents seem to be incompatible ? and together the boys hatch a "magical plan" involving two shinkansen bullet trains and the granting of wishes.
Kore-eda claims he was partially inspired by Rob Reiner's movie of Stephen King's Stand by Me, and there is a flavor of that in the way the brothers and their friends band together as they wander small-town Kyushu searching for the magic spot. But, as in Nobody Knows, the true chemistry exists somewhere in the air between the kids' personalities and the filmmaker's patented optimistic realism.
It takes on the contours of a tone poem. Flavors of Ozu waft in through an open window as Grandma (Kirin Kiki) fans herself in the still evening. An active but sleepy volcano dusts Kagoshima with fine ash. Koichi's tough but sympathetic teacher (Hiroshi Abe) confides that he, too, grew up without a dad. One of the boys has a crush on the school librarian. Koichi's pal Makoto (Seinosuke Nagayoshi) loves his little dog Marble so much he can't let go of him, no matter what. At home in Hakata, Ryu hangs out after school with three girls in the back room of a bar owned by the mother of pre-teen Megumi (Kyara Uchida), who wants to be an actress more than anything in the world. Grandpa (Isao Hashizume) and Grandma run a bake shop where they specialize in karukan cake ? but the flavor is too subtle for most. Kore-eda, supremely humane, paints in a flurry of details that reveal a grand canvas of love and loyalty if we take a step back. Don't miss this one.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE MIKE HEIN ANNOUNCES THE CONSOLIDATION OF THE REAL PROPERTY TAX SERVICE AGENCY AND DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE
Current Director Dorothy Martin Retiring After 25 Years of Service to Ulster County
County Executive Mike Hein has announced his proposal for the merger of the Real Property Tax Service Agency (RPTSA) into the Department of Finance upon the retirement of RPSTA Director Dorothy Martin.? RPTSA is currently a separate County department headed by an appointed Director.? The County Executive proposes instead, operating the Real Property Tax Service as a division within the Department of Finance, to be headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Finance/Director of Real Property Tax Service.? The merger will streamline government services and improve efficiency resulting in cost savings to taxpayers.
?First and foremost, I want to congratulate Dorothy Martin on her retirement and thank her for her amazing twenty-five years of service to the people of Ulster County,? said Ulster County Executive Mike Hein.? ?Her long career in public service, including the last six years as Director of the Real Property Tax Service Agency, has seen many accomplishments.?
County Executive Hein continued, ?I have always been committed to doing everything in my power to protect our taxpayers, streamline county government and provide the highest quality service for the people of our community.? This consolidation of the Real Property Office into the County?s Finance Department will succeed in all of these areas and is part of my administration?s overall commitment to incorporate statewide best practices.?
?I want to thank County Executive Mike Hein for the opportunity to serve in his administration as the Director of the RPTSA,? said Dorothy Martin.? ?His vision for the merger of the Agency with the Department of Finance is prudent and well planned; I fully support it.?
County Executive Hein will introduce a local law to the Ulster County Legislature for its consideration at the June meeting to authorize the merger of the Real Property Tax Service Agency into the Department of Finance.? The potential savings resulting from this consolidation are estimated at $46,000 for the balance of 2012 and $450,000 over the next 5 years.
The state-mandated function of the RPTSA is to provide services that assist local government officials in achieving and maintaining equitable property assessment administration.? The goal is to provide a sound, reliable, fair and easily understood foundation for tax equity within and between municipalities in Ulster County.
Dorothy Martin began her career by serving 17 years in county government in real property assessment in her home state of Michigan.? She relocated to New York in 1985 continuing her work in real property assessment.? She lives in Highland with her husband Anthony.? They have four children and two grandchildren.

While perusing the ConQuesT dealer room, I stopped to talk to Tyree Campbell, managing editor of small press publisher Sam?s Dot Publishing. He was kind enough to consent to a five-minute interview, in which he discussed how his small press operates:
Me: How long has Sam?s Dot Publishing been in operation?
Tyree Campbell: As Sam?s Dot it?s been operating since 2002. My predecessor was on-line mostly; we?re in print. My predecessor was mostly on-line since 1986. So we?ve been around for a while.
Me: So you were formerly an on-line publisher?
Tyree Campbell: Formerly on-line with a few smatterings of print. But then in 2002 when I took over we went very heavily into print.
Me: Was it publishing through its own website, or through some other e-book store?
Tyree Campbell: Just through our own website at the time.
Me: Then you went into print and now you?re starting to get back into e-books again.
Tyree Campbell: Not "again" so much. We?re starting to get into e-books. As I indicated earlier, we have about 75 to 80 titles available with Smashwords. We do have an Amazon Kindle store that we just opened up about two months ago, and I believe we have about 25-30 titles with them as well. But our main focus right now is print because that makes not just more money for us but it makes more money for our authors as well.
Me: How do you think that the e-book explosion in recent years has been changing business for small and medium sized publishers like yourself?
Tyree Campbell: Wow. Sometimes it?s a can of worms, sometimes it?s a benefit. It is getting more people reading. That?s a good thing. But to me there?s nothing quite like the smell of a book when you sit down and open it up and you?re sitting there in your reading room. I don?t think you get that with e-books. But because of the explosion of it it?s really good for our authors and it?s good for business too. And we get a wider spread of people reading our work and other people?s work as well. Overall I guess I?d have to say I?m in favor of it. Personally, however, I still buy print books myself.
Me: It?s kind of a surprise, you know, how Amazon only came out with the Kindle just a couple of years ago, and suddenly boom, e-books have arrived.
Tyree Campbell: Well, Amazon itself, I hate to say too much negative but Amazon is no friend of the small independent publisher.
Me: Yeah, I get that?I was watching the thing with the Independent Publishers Group.
Tyree Campbell: Because the small independent press does not do things in as great a volume as the New York publishers do, when you have a smaller volume of anything, be it electronic or print, it costs more per unit or for the overhead to get it out there, whereas with the New York publishers? A print book for us might cost anywhere from a dollar to a dollar fifty to print, per copy. For New York publishers, two cents.
Me: So I?ve noticed from your selection you seem to do a lot of science fiction, fantasy?
Tyree Campbell: Right. Science-fiction, fantasy, we do some horror. I have to say about the horror, my idea of a good horror story is one that you read with all the lights on, and you?re looking over your shoulders while you?re turning the pages. And since I run the place, that?s the kind of horror I get. I don?t do a lot of blood. When I see intestines I just want to make giraffes and zebras?they?re not scary. Our horror is very spooky and a little racier [inaudible].
Me: Do you take unsolicited manuscripts?
Tyree Campbell: Yes. In fact that?s all we get, pretty much. I will commission a piece now and then from a particular writer, but I?d say about 90% of our stories that we accept, be they novels or short stories, what-have-you, poems?are all submitted to our submissions addresses on-line. We?re always open to submissions.
Me: Almost none of the big publishers take unagented, unsolicited manuscripts anymore. Do you think that works to the benefit of smaller presses?
Tyree Campbell: Actually it does, because you see we don?t have a bottom line like New York does. I don?t have to sell 50,000 copies of something. I?d love to sell 50,000, but I don?t
have to, see. So I can accept some good, solid, readable material that may not win awards, and it won?t get published unless we publish it, but is very much worth reading. We turn down 90% of what we get in?it?s not publishable. You can?t pay me to publish your story. If we like it, we?ll pay you.
