There are a lot of people who are searching for ways to make money online. Due to the effects of the recession, there is no shortage of individuals who are out of work or who would like to have a second source of income. Some of them have turned to the internet in the hopes of making some easy money. However, the reality is that making money on the internet is not always as easy as some advertising materials claim it is.

You will find plenty of ads for various programs which claim you can make several thousands of dollars each month by working from home. While it?s definitely possible to make this kind of money, you need to know that you must work hard to achieve it. If you want to earn some money by using the internet, you will first need to decide how exactly you will do it.

There are multiple types of activities which can be done online to bring you some income. Providing services is one of them. This could be writing articles, designing graphics and logos, creating websites and more. You will essentially become a freelancer and will get paid by various clients for jobs that you complete for them. It?s relatively easy to find work on freelancing websites or forums, but in the beginning you are likely to get only some of the low paying projects as you?re still building your reputation on the site.

Another way to earn money on the internet is by selling products. You buy the products from a wholesaler at a lower price and then resell them to others at a profit through various channels, such as your own e-commerce site, online auction sites, etc. If you find a product that is in high demand and a supplier that can sell it to you at a good price, it is possible to make very good profits this way. However, you will need to do adequate research in order to find something that you can sell at a profit.

Affiliate marketing is a popular choice for those who are looking to make money online. It involves promoting another company?s products and services on the internet. You get paid a commission when a visitor that you refer to their website purchases the product, or takes an action that doesn?t require them to buy anything, such as filling out a quote request form. Affiliate marketing can be very profitable if done right, but there are some challenges. The biggest one is figuring out how you will find visitors to drive traffic to the merchant?s website. In many cases, you will need to spend some of your own money to buy advertising space on other sites and search engines.

No matter which method you are planning to use to make some money on the internet, you should first do some research to get complete information about any online business activity that you want to get yourself into. There is plenty of information and advice on online business that you can find for free. Beware of any product that makes unrealistic claims, such as allowing you to make thousands of dollars each month without doing any work or investing your own money.

Electricity grids fail across half of India

NEW DELHI (AP) ? India's energy crisis cascaded?over half the country Tuesday when three of its regional grids collapsed, leaving 620 million people without government-supplied electricity for several hours in, by far, the world's biggest-ever blackout.

Hundreds of trains stalled across the country and traffic lights went out, causing widespread traffic jams in New Delhi. Electric crematoria stopped operating, some with bodies half burnt, power officials said. Emergency workers rushed generators to coal mines to rescue miners trapped underground.

The massive failure ? a day after a similar, but smaller power failure ? has raised serious concerns about India's outdated infrastructure and the government's inability to meet its huge appetite for energy as the country aspires to become a regional economic superpower.

Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde blamed the new crisis on states taking more than their allotted share of electricity.

"Everyone overdraws from the grid. Just this morning I held a meeting with power officials from the states and I gave directions that states that overdraw should be punished. We have given instructions that their power supply could be cut," he told reporters.

The new power failure affected 620 million people across 20 of India's 28 states ? about double the population of the United States. The blackout was unusual in its reach, stretching from the border with Myanmar in the northeast to the Pakistani border about 3,000 kilometers (1,870 miles) away. Its impact, however, was softened by Indians' familiarity with frequent blackouts and the widespread use of backup generators for major businesses and key facilities such as hospitals and airports.

Shinde later said power was fully restored in the northeast grid four hours after it went down, and that the north grid had 45 percent power and the east grid 35 percent. R.N. Nayak, chairman of Power Grid Corp., which runs the nation's power system, said he expected to have full power later in the evening.

The outages came just a day after India's northern power grid collapsed for several hours. Indian officials managed to restore power several hours later, but at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday the northern grid collapsed again, said Shailendre Dubey, an official at the Uttar Pradesh Power Corp. in India's largest state. About the same time, the eastern grid failed and then the northeastern grid followed, energy officials in those regions said. The grids serve more than half India's population.

In West Bengal, express trains and local electric trains were stopped at stations across the state of West Bengal on the eastern grid. Crowds of people thronged the stations, waiting for any transport to take them to their destinations.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said it would take at least 10 to 12 hours to restore power and asked office workers to go home.

"The situation is very grave. We are doing everything to restore power," West Bengal Power Minister Manish Gupta said.

New Delhi's Metro rail system, which serves about 1.8 million people a day, immediately shut down for the second day in a row. Police said they managed to evacuate Delhi's busy Rajiv Chowk station in under half an hour before closing the shutters.

S.K. Jain, 54, said he was on his way to file his income tax return when the Metro closed and now would almost certainly miss the deadline.

Tuesday's blackout eclipsed yesterday's in India, which covered territory including 370 million people. The third largest blackout affected 100 million people in Indonesia in 2005, according to reports by The Associated Press.

India's demand for electricity has soared along with its economy in recent years, but utilities have been unable to meet the growing needs. India's Central Electricity Authority reported power deficits of more than 8 percent in recent months.

In addition, vast amounts of power are pirated through unauthorized wiring that taps into the electrical system.

The power deficit was worsened by a weak monsoon that lowered hydroelectric generation and kept temperatures higher, further increasing electricity usage as people seek to cool off.

But any connection to the grid remains a luxury for many. One-third of India's households do not even have electricity to power a light bulb, according to last year's census.

Credit Repair Tips And Tricks To Consider | Creative Techniques To ...

Bad credit hurts you in nearly all your financial dealings, especially those that involve extending credit to you. Poor credit impacts your ability to move forward with your life. There are ways, however, that you can fix past mistakes and repair your credit score. Follow these tips to repair your credit.

You can dispute inflated interest rates if you are being charged more than you should be. When a creditor hits you with incredibly high interest rates, you may have a case for negotiating to a lower amount. You did however sign a contract that agrees you will pay off all interests as well as the debt. If you choose to bring a lawsuit against your creditors, use the high interest rates against them.

TIP! Document calls and mail to and from credit bureaus if some information on your credit report is inaccurate. Note down and summarize every communication, whether it be by phone, post, or email, so that you have a complete record of your efforts.

Work closely with all of your creditors if you are aiming towards repairing your credit. Avoid collection to improve your credit score. This can be accomplished by negotiating with them for a change in due date or monthly charges.

Anything on your credit report that you feel is inaccurate should be disputed. Contact the credit agency in writing, with documentation to support the errors that you are disputing. Also include a request for a return receipt to make sure the agency gets it.

Attempts to defend negligence or bad credit will not succeed, even if they are justifiable. The creditors are only worried about results and numbers. If anything, it will just hurt you as it will draw attention to the negative event.

TIP! Avoid using a law office that claims they can fix your credit. Less ethical lawyers have realized that with the current glut of consumers with credit trouble, there is money to be made by charging high fees for ineffective credit repair help.

When you are involved in a credit crunch, you have many debts but not enough money to pay them. To make sure everyone gets a share, spread out your money distribution. Paying each creditor something, even less than the minimum payment due, can usually appease your creditors enough that they will not turn your accounts over to collection agencies.

Minimum Payment

Your record of repayment will help improve your credit. Make payments to your credit card that include more than the minimum payment amount if possible each month. Late payments are called in to the credit rating companies, and this hurts your score. Consistently making at least your minimum payment shows that you take your financial responsibility seriously.

TIP! Work with collectors to create a realistic repayment plan. While this will not remove the debts from your credit report completely, they will be showing as paid and no longer negatively affect your rating.

Keep your credit card balances below 50 percent of your credit limit. Any balances that are over half your limit drag your credit rating down. So be sure to pay your credit card down or, if you can not, try to use another credit card.

Research consolidation options that may help you rebuild your credit record. This can give you a very good shot at eliminating your debt and fixing your credit quickly. This way you can have multiple debts consolidated into a single simple payment. Make sure you know the specific details of any consolidation plan you evaluate in order to determine if it is the best one for you.

If you are experiencing difficulties paying your monthly expenses, you should get in touch with your creditors right away to develop other payment plans. Creditors tend to be less likely to make negative credit reports in situations where you take the initiative to work with them. Another benefit of being proactive is that you can alleviate your financial burden and open up your ability to pay the bills on time that will not work with you on payments.

TIP! Do not carry high balances on any of your credit accounts. You could increase your credit score just by paying down some balances.

When working to better your credit score, it might be prudent to consider debt consolidation. It is easier to form a budget and track expenses when you only have one payment to make. This can help you make your payments on time.

Credit Unions

Credit unions are an option for those who have run out of options when trying to find a line of credit to boost their score. Credit unions may be able to offer more credit options or better rates than a larger bank, based on an understanding of the local area rather than the national situation.

TIP! A great credit score should allow you to get a mortgage on the house of your dreams. If you pay your mortgage as agreed, your credit score will rocket into the stratosphere.

Turn a negative into a positive. Repairing your credit standing is not impossible, although it will take some discipline and patience. There are free services to help you on your way to fixing your credit. Apply the following advice from these tips to help you get your credit back on track again

University Park On Alert For Burglaries

Ali Williams came home to a window kicked in, and at least a thousand dollars in jewelry taken from her house.

"The burglar left muddy tracks all over the house," Williams explained.

It is one of at least 7 burglaries since May in University Park according to police.

Williams said the burglar went through all the bedrooms. "All our jewelry was on our beds, picked through."

They say homes have been hit between 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Usually, hours when homeowners have gone to work or school.

In most cases the burglar has taken jewelry and electronics.

Police are advising folks to have an alarm system and say older style homes with tall shrubs have been a target.

Police said they are taking place early during the week.

Romney visits Jerusalem's Western Wall

JERUSALEM - Mitt and Ann Romney visited one of the holiest sites in the Jewish faith today, arriving at the Western Wall on a sacred day of mourning in Israel.

The Romneys arrived via motorcade at the site of prayer and spent about 15 minutes walking to the wall and placing their prayers in the wall and got a warm reception.

The wall is split in two - one side for men and the other for women - so Ann and her female staffers approached one side, while the candidate approached the other with Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz.

There were hundreds of Jewish worshippers praying at the site on this holy fasting day of Tisha B'Av and cell phones were out snapping photos of Romney. Many chanted at him as he walked slowly toward the wall.

One man started clapping. "Good luck to you," he told Romney "God bless you." Another shouted, "Here comes the next president!" "He is for Israel!" shouted another.

Among those with Romney were son Josh, senior adviser Dan Senor and Spencer Zwick.

Romney stood for several minutes with a man who had diagrams and looked to be describing the wall and where on the Temple Mount Romney was standing. Romney then took a piece of paper and wrote something on it. He approached the wall, bowed his head and put his right hand on the wall. After about 20 seconds he looked up and stuck his note into a space on the wall.

One man shouted, "Beat Obama, governor.! Beat Obama." Another said, "Get rid of Obamacare."

"Mr. Romney, say hello to Georgia!" one man said.

Romney looked over his shoulder and waved. "Hello, Georgia."

The Wailing Wall, as the wall is also known as, is the outside wall that surrounded the second temple. Today is said to be the day that the Romans destroyed the Second Temple, leading to the Tisha B'Av

Low Income Auto Loans ? Is It Possible To Get A Car Loan With Low ...

Modern technology has gifted man one of his greatest passion ? cars. Ever since the invention of steam engine vehicles in 1769, cars have been popular. Everyone is just floored by the beauty of a car.

Sadly, buying a car has become difficult. All thanks to high purchase prices of these beauties. Most new cars start from $20,000 and a good used car is also expensive. Also, the gas prices are increasing which makes car buying very hard.

The economy is reviving and people have just started getting their jobs back. Finding a high income job is still a challenge. This creates a very bad situation because a car is needed to reach your work place but you cannot afford it with your job. Lenders have understood this situation quite well and that is why auto loans for low income borrowers have been introduced.

Most lenders require you to earn at least $1,500 per month. But, you can avail these loans even if your income is as less as $1,000. Now, don?t worry if you earn less than it because there are many other factors which decide your approval. Know them so that you can tackle them well.

1. Credit Score ? Higher the score, better it is.

2. Credit Profile ? Here the requirement is that it should be longer.

3. Term of Loan ? You should try and keep it short.

4. Loan to Value Ratio ? 70% -80% is optimum.

5. Down Payment ? 10%- 20% would improve your chances.

6. Employment Term ? At least six months.

7. Time at Residence ? You need to be living at the same residence for at least six months.

8. Co-signer ? Having a co-signer reduces lender?s risk.

When you have a low income, you must be better at these aspects. Now, it is quite possible that you have a bad credit score and earn less. For such a situation, get a larger down payment and search for a co-signer.

Now, as you have low income, it is essential that you don?t go for a very expensive car. If you go for an expensive car, its payments would also be huge. To avoid them, you will have to go for an unnecessarily longer loan term. This will increase the chances of an upside down loan. Hence, a used car is your answer. Once you improve on your income, you can always buy your dream car. Right now, it is important to get you a car that works for you. When you go for a pre-owned car, don?t forget to read the Vehicle History Report. It?s always good to know what you are getting into. Also, get the Odometer Disclosure Report because few lenders do ask for it.

Applying for Low Income Auto Loans is simple because you don?t need any additional documents. The only important thing is to prove your income. For that, you can use your recent pay stubs. If you are self-employed, it is important that you provide your IT details to the lender.

Low income auto loans are easy to get and a boon to those who are struggling with low income. So, don?t wait anymore. Cars are a necessity and it?s time to fulfill your car needs.

Ezautofinance.net is a leading auto financing company that serves the entire nation. We understand that low income is the cause of several unfulfilled car dreams and so, offer low income auto loans. Avail them and get ready to ride comfortably in your car.

Alternative sports all within a few miles of Oak Cliff ? and a few in our own backyard

Did you know that tug-of-war, hand tennis and live-pigeon shooting have been Olympic sports? Well, the bird-shooting thing was held just once, in 1900. But doesn?t it go to show that what is considered a sport is subjective? And sports ? even ones with funny names like cornhole or mushball ? can be life?enhancing. Whether you?re looking for improved physical fitness, healthy competition, camaraderie or pure silliness, there?s a sport for you. You just might not know it exists.

Hooping

Jennifer Barclay hosts a group of women on her front yard most weekends for what she calls ?hoop and gab.? Barclay is part of Oak Cliff Hooplah, an informal group of hula-hooping enthusiasts. ?When you?re hooping, you?re really just standing there, so you can visit all you want,? she says. Hooping is fun, easier than it looks and a pretty good workout, she says.

Get your hoop on // Search Facebook for Oak Cliff Hooplah to stay in the loop (lah).

?

Roller Derby

Skate counterclockwise around a circuit track in two teams of five players. Each team?s designated ?jammer? scores points by lapping the opposing team while ?blockers? use physical force to stop them. This is the quintessential contact sport for women, so you have to be willing to take an elbow to the jaw every now and then. Besides, in roller derby, bruises are badges of honor. Plus, you get to adopt a clever, tough-sounding name such as Babe Ruthless.

Roll // Assassination City Roller Derby league plays at Fair Park Coliseum. For details about fall leagues, visit acderby.com or derbydevils.com.

Badminton

Hit the birdie with your racket to your opponent?s side of the court in such a way that he or she cannot return it. The game looks a little like tennis, but the rackets are nimbler and the balls aren?t balls but tiny nets with rubber tips called shuttlecocks or ?birdies.? It is an Olympic sport. The Dallas Badminton Club, active year-round, is based at Reverchon Recreation Center at 3505 Maple. Founded in 1988, the club regularly hosts tournaments for local and out-of-state players.?The badminton Dallas Open is held annually on Labor Day, and a family-oriented tournament benefitting Scottish Rite Hospital and Reverchon?s after school programs is held each December.

Play birdie // Open play is 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Reverchon. Training and coaching is offered there Saturdays at 10 a.m. Players must have a City of Dallas recreation center membership, which can be acquired at the front desk. The cost of an annual individual DBC membership is $60. Family memberships are $100, and juniors, without accompanying parents, are $35.

Ah, the sport of kings. Fancy hats, refreshing cocktails, royals. Well, this ain?t that. Bike polo, a sport whose popularity is growing in Texas, is played on tennis courts. And it?s more like a bunch of punk-rock-looking guys and gals in cutoffs, wielding mallets alongside their mountain bikes. Dylan Holt of Oak Cliff organizes the Dallas Bike Polo League, which meets weekly at Norbuck Park. About 10 bike polo loyalists show up every week to compete, joke around and, occasionally, have a minor wreck. Most experienced cyclists catch onto bike polo quickly, Holt says. ?It?s mostly just for fun, but we do take it seriously,? he says.

Play polo // The Dallas Bike Polo League meets at Norbuck Park on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

Mushball

Mushball is almost softball, but the ball is even softer, so you don?t need a glove. Don?t expect to hit it out of the park. Because of the mushiness, it takes a herculean swing to make the ball go very far. Dallas YMCA?s fall adult, co-ed mushball season starts next month.

Play mushball // It costs $450 to register a team. Teams play seven regular season games followed by a post-season elimination playoff tournament. The games will be played at a City of Dallas park field, to be determined. To register your team or find one to join, call Dallas YMCA at 214.954.0500.

?

Cornhole

Get the bag in or near the hole. Players, two per team, take turns throwing beanbags at a hole located at one end of an elevated platform. Though it is one of the few sports that allows you to hold a beer in one hand as you compete, it can get serious.

Play cornhole // You can find a cornhole league any season of the year. Dallas Sport and Social offers a league that plays weekly at Draft Picks, 703 McKinney. The cost is $68.50 for a team and $38.50 for an individual player. For details, visit dallassportsleagues.com/leagues/cornhole.

Dodgeball

Getting smacked in the face with a speeding foam ball doesn?t hurt that bad, says Tom Wakefield, commissioner of Dallas Dodgeball.

?We had a lady get hit right in the face, and she just laughed,? he says. ?It?s a sport that anyone can play. It?s the most natural sport there is.?

The group hosts co-ed, open-play games every other week ? including soccer moms and 6-year-old girls ? with plans to launch a league later this year.

Wakefield and his son formed the group eight years ago, inspired by the 2004 comedy ?Dodgeball.? After watching the movie, they searched the internet for local leagues. They didn?t find any, so they started their own.

?Other people must have been looking for leagues, too, because we had 40 or 50 people sign up in the first week.?

The rules of dodgeball are lengthy, but the objective is simple: Grab a ball, and hurl it at an opposing team member to try and eliminate him or her from the game. Repeat. The last team standing wins.

Most people play recreationally, but there a few serious athletes. Wakefield took his best players to the Toronto Dodgeball Tournament in February 2011 where they placed fifth out of 20 teams from the United States and Canada.

Play dodgeball // Dallas Dodgeball hosts recreational games 4:30-6:30 p.m. Saturdays at alternating venues: Sole Roll Indoor Soccer, 4435 McEwen by the Dallas Galleria, and the Dunford Recreation Center in Mesquite. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. The Dallas Dodgeball Shootout is an open tournament for ages 17 and up, set for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 13 at Sole Roll. Registration is $200 per team with a cash prize. For details, visit dallasdodgeball.com.

Ultimate Frisbee

When you think Frisbee, do you imagine a couple college-age dudes, all smiles, tossing colorful disks on a windswept beach? Sure, that?s Frisbee. But it is not Ultimate Frisbee. The formations look a little like football and the objective is to move the disk into the end zone. There?s a lot of running, passing and jumping and falling, but it is non-contact, at least that?s what the rules dictate. Ultimater Mike Ahern has been playing since 1993 and says he likes not only the athleticism involved, but also the ?camaraderie of the Ultimate community.? It?s different from many other team sports in that, in general, individuals sign up for the league and then are drafted onto a team as opposed to a bunch of people forming a team and then joining a league.

?The Ultimate way makes for more of a sense of community because you get to know more people and you?re less likely to develop deep grudges,? Ahern says. ?That guy you?re mad at one season may be your teammate in the next.?

The ultimate Frisbee demographics skew younger, Ahern says, but there is a significant subset of older people playing these days, and that stereotypical Frisbee guy ? ?the protohippie, let?s say? ? is an endangered species. And it?s not just the guys. Maybe one-third of the players are female, Ahern says.

play ultimate // Beginners can find pick-up games Mondays at The Village Apartments on Southwestern or Wednesdays alternating among Norbuck Park, Glencoe Park and Lake Highlands Park. Winter league is popular among Dallas players, though the games are held in Oak Point near Denton County. The leagues are divided into recreational and competitive. Winter league costs about $70 and runs December through March. Ahern is involved in the Irving league. Cost is in the neighborhood of $30 for a season of league play. Land Paddling or Paddleboarding

Paddling down the Katy Trail, you incredulously wonder? Yes, Fickey is an avid advocate of land paddling ? which involves a flexible, bouncy type of skateboard called a longboard and a wide-blade paddle called a Kahuna Big Stick ? though it admittedly garners some strange looks. ?It?s a free-spirited kind of sport, he says, ?an innovation for surfer-types in this landlocked city.?

Stand-up water paddling is an option for those in close proximity to White Rock Lake. Both land and water forms offer intense, low impact core and overall muscle workouts, says Fickey, whose day job entails event planning for Deep Ellum Brewing Company. ?Plus, I am barefoot a lot,? he says. ?You can do these sports shoeless, and it?s less expensive than cycling.? Longboards can be purchased at any sporting goods store for about $130. You can get the stick online (kahunacreations.com) for about $100 or at Quicksilver (NorthPark Center) or Sun and Ski Sports (Central Expressway at Royal), to name a couple. As for the water paddle boarding equipment, it is easy to rent at the White Rock Paddle Company, located at the Mockingbird-Buckner corner of White Rock Lake, where you can also purchase lessons.

Play kickball // Games are held at Glencoe Park near SMU or Norbuck Park at Northwest Highway and Buckner. The cost is about $75 per person or $630 for a team. To sign up, visit dallassportsleagues.com.

Archery

12.07.10 Texas Arche optLH Good sport

Southern Methodist University alumnus Clint Montgomery has been practicing archery since his mom said ?no? to the BB gun, he says. He has played other sports ? tennis, football, basketball ? but he always liked the bow and arrow, despite the fact that it wasn?t exactly mainstream. As the director of the Dallas Archery Club, he hopes to make it more accessible.

Many years ago, you could find people practicing archery at public parks and bowling alleys all around Dallas, Montgomery says, but times have changed. Now, we?re in an era where we must be protected from ourselves. The Dallas Archery Club, which started long ago as a benefit for Texas Instruments employees and recently opened facilities in Plano and North Dallas, aims to change all that and make archery available to everyone. To that end, they offer opportunities to try the sport at little or no cost.

The sport has enjoyed a surge in popularity, thanks in part to the teen drama ? The Hunger Games,? Montgomery says.

?Since we?ve made [archery] accessible, every race, creed, size and age and ability ? a kid in a wheelchair, even ? can be seen side by side here at the range. Everyone is the same on the [shooting] line.?

The club is working with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department to create mobile ranges at public parks around the city. Montgomery says he hopes the club will have 50 or so ranges throughout the region in the near future. Once you take up the sport seriously, the equipment ? a bow and arrows ? runs around $200. But it?s sort of like golf in that you can spend what you want to spend ? the fancy stuff is upward of $2,000.

Start shooting // An intro to archery class is held 11 a.m.-noon Saturdays and 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays at the Texas Archery Academy Indoor Range, 600 B Accent Drive in Plano. It?s $10 per person, and all equipment is included. You can try archery for free 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays at the Elm Fork Shooting Range, 10751 Luna. It?s $5 to practice longer. Orienteering

Were you the kid who loved getting lost in the woods? It didn?t scare you because you could handle any terrain and always found your way out? If so, orienteering is the quintessential sport for grown-up you. Using maps and compasses, participants navigate their way along a cross-country course and compete to finish fastest. It isn?t necessarily kids? play. It is known to draw some seriously competitive athletes. Take, for example, Peter Snell, once one of the fastest middle-distance runners in the world. Snell and his wife Miki live in the White Rock area and have been heavily involved in the North Texas Orienteering Association for years. ?When the athletic career is over, the desire to be good and achieve things doesn?t just go away,? says Peter, who won three Olympic gold medals for his home, New Zealand, in the 1960s.

He and Miki, who also was a competitive runner, found that orienteering is one of few sports in which performance doesn?t drastically deteriorate with age.

?It?s a fascinating sport because you have to be very fit, but you have to use your brain,? Miki says.

Find your way // The NTOA sponsors many events September through May. Every event features a beginners? clinic that starts at the same time as event registration. Generally, local events cost $7-$10. You?ll spot people of all ages at orienteering events, and there are special programs for juniors and Scouts. National Orienteering Day is September 29 at Harry Moss Nature Preserve on Greenville at Royal in northeast Dallas. Learn more at ntoa.com.

Unicycling

Jonah Hill is training for the Lonestar Ride Fighting AIDS, a 150-mile charity bike ride, and he meets with a group of cyclists every Saturday morning for training rides. The difference here is that Hill intends to do the whole 150 with only one wheel. Hill learned how to ride a unicycle about six years ago, after he saw a friend of his dad?s riding one. He bought a unicycle for $20 on eBay and taught himself to ride. Later, he bought a unicycle with a 26-inch wheel for long-distance rides at Richardson Bike Mart. Anyone who tries to unicycle will fall down. But it wasn?t as hard as he thought. ?It?s a great workout for your core muscles,? he says. Instead of doing juggling tricks and joining the circus, Hill is more interested in endurance riding. He and a few other unicyclists meet most Saturday mornings at White Rock Lake. But there are several other unicycle meet-ups as well.

Ride a unicycle // Search facebook for DFW Unicycle Club to keep up with the one-wheel scene.

Indoor rock climbing

Climb to the top of an artificial rock wall, using the climbing holds that jut out from the wall. Try not to look down. We may not have any mountains around Dallas, but you can still experience what it?s like to climb one. Indoor rock climbing engages all your muscle groups and promotes balance. It can get competitive, though. Exposure Rock Climbing in Carrollton oversees Team Texas, a youth climbing team that has won four USA Climbing national championships.

Climb // The nearest facility is Dallas Rocks, on Forest and Greenville, which offers 14,000 square feet of climbing area. Day passes start at about $12 plus equipment rental. Memberships are about $50-$60 per month with special discounts for police, firemen and EMS. Visit dallasclimbing.com.

When eBay bidders see red, bids rise

By Linda Carroll, TODAY contributor

A screenshot shows a Nintendo Wii for sale on a red background. Researchers have found that red backgrounds lead to more aggressive bidding on eBay.

If you?re planning on selling something on eBay, make sure the background color in your ad is red.

Researchers have found that red backgrounds lead to more aggressive bidding, according to a study published in the Journal of Consumer Research.

A corollary to that finding: Don?t use red on the background if you?re opting for a Best-Offer sale. Then the aggression will be directed toward you, the seller, and buyers will be trying to wangle the best deal possible.

When we?re bidding in an auction, the red effect isn?t something we can protect ourselves against because we?re not conscious of it, said study co-author Rajesh Bagchi, an associate professor of marketing at the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech.

?I would suggest that you come up with a maximum price you?re willing to pay in advance so you won?t be affected by the immediate,? he added. ?If you don?t, and you get into a bidding war, there?s nothing you can do to protect yourself.?

Bagchi and his co-author, Amar Cheema, an associate professor at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, ran several experiments to see how color backgrounds affect buying behavior.

In one study, the researchers looked at actual eBay sales of Nintendo Wii bundles. They found that buyers upped their bids in bigger increments when the background was red rather than blue.

To see whether that was a real effect, the researchers took their study into the lab and asked 78 college students to take part in a simulated auction of Wii games. The study volunteers were randomly assigned to see a page with a red or blue background. They were told that the current bid on the game was $225 and asked to enter their highest bid.

Sure enough, the students looking at red backgrounds bid much higher. Their bids jumped an average of $63.17 more versus $35 more for those looking at blue backgrounds.

The students also filled out surveys designed to ferret out levels of aggression and arousal. Those who were looking at red reported much higher levels of aggression. And that, Bagchi said, is because red makes us feel more aroused.

In another experiment, the researchers looked at how people behave when they are in a situation where they are negotiating directly with the seller ? a situation comparable to the ?Best Offer? feature on eBay. Those who looked at red backgrounds offered less than those who saw blue.

?In an auction, you?re trying to outbid others,? Bagchi said. ?It?s a competition to acquire the item. And your aggression pushes you to bid higher. In a negotiation you?re not competing with other bidders. Instead, you?re competing with the seller to get the best deal possible, so that pushes the price down.?

Beverly Hills Immigration Law: Number of Unregistered Latino ...

HUFFINGTON POST LATINO VOICES

By Janell Ross

July 22, 2012

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/22/unregistered-latino-voters-swing-states_n_1691032.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular

The day before a class action civil rights lawsuit accusing Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his office of wide-scale civil rights violations went to trial in Phoenix, a handful of people stood at the corner of North 27th Avenue and West Indian School Road just off the city?s Black Canyon Freeway.

Wearing ?Adios Arpaio? T-shirts, the small group staged a protest at one of the busiest intersections in mostly Latino West Phoenix, aimed at what some consider two of Arizona?s biggest problems: Arpaio and apathy.

Some signs read, ?Honk If You Don?t Like Arpaio.? Others bore the words, ?Register to Vote Here.? After an hour, 11 people registered to vote.

?I know that sounds tiny,? said Daria Ovide, a coordinator for the Campaign for Arizona?s Future, a union-financed group working to register Latino voters in Arizona, a key battleground state. ?But believe me, it matters.?

What happens at thousands of intersections, car shows and carnivals when eligible, but unregistered Latino voters, and avid canvassers like Ovide meet, may well determine the outcome of the next presidential election. Those meetings could so dramatically reshape the political landscape, activists and analysts agree that consistently red states could become swing states or turn blue.

Right now in 10 battleground states -- places where both the Obama and Romney campaigns say victory is feasible -- there are 12.1 million unregistered, but potentially eligible, Latino adults, according to new data released late Thursday by the Center for American Progress, a Washington, D.C., think tank. In uber-important Florida, the state's 1.4 million unregistered, potentially eligible Latino adults represent a group of voters five times larger than Obama?s margin of victory in 2008.

?If just a portion of these potential voters do come out and vote they could swing the election,? said Philip Wolgin, an immigration policy analyst at the center. ?And while I don?t think that Texas is going to become a swing state tomorrow, I also don?t think that four years ago anyone thought that Arizona would be either. Look at it now.?

In Arizona, 405,300 Latino U.S. citizens do not have voting credentials. And another 575,300 Latino permanent legal residents could become naturalized citizens, register and vote.

In 2008, John McCain carried the state by 195,404 votes.

These potential voters, according to a series of recent polls, care deeply about immigration issues like racial profiling by law enforcement and the Supreme Court?s June decision on Arizona?s SB170, ?show me your papers? laws, as well as jobs, education and health care, said Clarissa Martinez, the National Council of La Raza's director of civic engagement and immigration. The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) is a Washington, D.C.-based civil rights organization.

Having more Hispanic voters in the political system, could force action on some of the nation?s more intractable political issues, she said.

For most Central and South American immigrants, the wait for a visa that allows for legal immigration to the United States can stretch for two decades or more. Once here, immigrants may apply for legal permanent residency. Most legal permanent residents must wait three to five years to apply for citizenship. Then, after passing English-language proficiency, U.S. civics and history exams and paying an $800 fee, legal permanent residents typically wait a minimum of four to six months to be summoned to a swearing in ceremony where they become U.S. citizens.

NCLR is working with local nonprofit agencies and canvassers in states like Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, California, North Carolina, New York and Idaho to help those who are eligible to become naturalized citizens do so and those who can register to vote obtain credentials.

?When we talk about electoral expansion, you really are talking about sweeping changes to the nation?s political calculus, there?s no doubt,? said Martinez. ?But part of the challenge is that the best resourced efforts are concentrated in election years and are associated with candidates or parties who are interested in the short-term. They want to win the next election.?

To win the next election, most campaigns focus their energy and money on reaching so-called habitual voters or reducing the number of people who turn out to vote for the opposition. Habitual voters are the share of already registered voters who vote in every election possible.

In some ways, the limited interest political parties and candidates have shown in helping people to become citizens is good, said Martinez.

Politicizing the citizenship process could become unseemly. On the other, investment in naturalization and voter registration work is desperately needed right now, she said.

In Phoenix, the "Adios Arpiao" crew gets the funding it needs from Unite Here, a hospitality workers union, and the AFL-CIO, said Ovide. The group aims to counterbalance Voter ID policies, the effects of shortened early voting periods and efforts to identify alleged non-citizens on voter rolls around the country. Opponents say these measures will make it more difficult for many older voters, minorities and low -income adults to participate. Proponents insist that the laws protect the integrity of the voting process and prevent alleged voter fraud.

The day that Arpaio?s trial began, canvasser?s wearing "Adios Arpaio" T-shirts fanned out to supermarkets, a gas station, a library and a restaurant in hopes of registering Latino voters.

That day, they registered 150, Ovide said.

Home Improvement Tips: More Than Curb Appeal ? Special Article ...

Big cleaning projects can become expensive if you need a lot of cleaning solutions. Consider making your own cleaning solutions at home with common household items like vinegar. There are plenty of places you can find recipes for ecologically friendly cleaning liquid recipes. It?s inexpensive and great for the environment, too.

Before you embark on a home improvement project, consider the impact on your home?s resale value. For example, converting your garage into a living room may make sense for your immediate needs, but many home buyers are turned off by this sort of addition. Even if you don?t plan on selling immediately, circumstances can change, and you may have to spend additional money getting your home back to the way it was.

Never try to use makeshift solutions or inferior equipment to replace tools you need for your home improvement project. While you may be tempted to save time and money this way, the equipment you attempt to replace is expensive or hard to get hold of for a reason. Using stopgap measures can give you unsatisfactory results or even expose you to danger.

Are the fans in your home looking a bit overworked? Why not buy new fan blades and replace the old ones, so that your home looks clean. Dirty fan blades can make your home look dirty. If you are looking for an easy way to keep your home clean, try putting in new fan blades.

When painting trim in your home, choose a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint, especially in areas that see a lot of traffic. People naturally touch door frames and trims, and glossy paints are much easier to wipe clean than flat paints. As a bonus, using high-gloss trim paints will provide some contrast to flatter wall colors.

If you live in an older house that has imperfections in the ceiling surface, you can camouflage them with the right lighting choice. Avoid lights that flood the ceiling surface with light, instead, choosing recessed can lighting or low-hanging pendant-style fixtures. These types of lighting do not direct light across the ceiling, which helps in hiding ripples, bulges or patched cracks.

Hang your brooms up and off the floor. Over time, the bristles on the brush will become deformed and no longer clean well if the are on the floor. Hanging the brooms will extend their lifetime. You will end up replacing brooms less and you will save money by buying less frequently.

Give the bubble in your old vinyl floor covering a shot! If a bubble exists in an old vinyl floor, it is easy to slice into it and release the air. This will temporarily flatten the bubble. You?ll need to inject some fresh glue, however, to hold the repaired section to the floor. Use glue that you buy in syringes to do the job.

Beware custom made items. Custom is great for cabinets, but it can get costly when it comes to most items. Save money by figuring out how to modify store-bought items, or how to modify your home itself to fit around the item you purchase. This will typically end up saving you money.

Damaged, bent, or rusted metal railings are one of the most offensive eyesores commonly seen on older houses. For a modern look that doesn?t upstage the classic exterior of your house, replace metal railing with richly textured wood supports. You can stain the wood a darker color or leave it natural depending upon the exterior color of your house.

As you begin your home improvement project, it is important to always keep your budget in mind. It is essential to plan the project out ahead of time and get prices on the materials that you will need to make your vision a reality. It is also important to consider how long the project will take you.

If your shower and bathtub seem to be building up mildew, or leaking a little bit, it may be time for you to re-caulk. Removing your old caulk and putting in new should actually be done once a year as your typical bathroom maintenance. You can purchase calk from any hardware store for a very reasonable price.

Home improvement does not necessarily mean just keeping up with your house. It also encompasses your garage, trees, or anything that is on your property. Keep your trees trimmed every year to not only keep them looking beautiful, but to assure that broken branches will not hurt your house if they break.

Home improvement tasks never end for the homeowner. But they become not so much a bother as a source of pride once you complete projects successfully. Then, seeing the handiwork you have accomplished, you can say to yourself with pride: ?Yes, I did that, and did it well.?

For the very best home builders in springfield mo be sure to be methodical and choose the best business for you.

Health and Fitness Issues Regarding Hand and Wrist Pain ...

There is probably no worse aggravation than having hand or wrist pains and you do not realize just how important your hands are until you are unable to use them because they hurt so dog-gone badly. Just because you are in pain, does not mean you have severe arthritis or carpal tunnel, you may very well just have strained them from overuse or repetitious motion.

With all the technology we have now days, it?s very easy to strain your hands by trying to work the key-board on a mobile phone, or worse typing all day on a key board, but there are solutions to these problems and one of them, the one I ,most prefer also has something to do with technology. That?s right, I use technology to overcome the forces from the very technology that is hurting my hands and challenging my dexterity.

For instance, instead of typing all day on the key-board, why not invest in some voice recognition software. There are several versions to choose from; IBM makes a very powerful speech recognition software package. Microsoft includes it in their Vista Operating system, for both navigation and for use in word processor and email programs. Better yet, why not go buy the Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.0 and load that software on your computer.

Earlier in the week a Russian hacker—Alexy Borodin—revealed a fairly easy way to make in-app purchases in iOS without actually paying for them. Apple has of course since been working on a fix to the gaping hole, but adding insult to injury, Alexy has now revealed that a very similar hack also works with desktop apps downloaded from the Mac App Store. home & hobbies: ScrapTherapy's June Stars & Stand-outs

Woot!? Three of my layouts are stand-outs this month over at?ScrapTherapy challenges...the A-Z, the Tech Tute + 1, and a Room Challenge!!? http://www.scraptherapy.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=361&p=220293#p220293.

In other news I am already thinking about Cai's birthday later in the year.... It's fun planning it, although it will be pretty straightforward. ? Cai is maybe getting a bit too old for traditional?party games, so rather than games I am going to focus on the party table/decorations/food and getting all the details just right.? I've already got some nice cake-stands & glass candy jars I plan on using..
The entertainment will probably be the swimming pool.??? It is pretty?fabulous and we have never had a pool before let alone a pool party, so I think that will be all the games & entertainment right there. ? I think I might get those underwater disposable cameras for each of the guests.? I will?get?the party table all set up beforehand, & take a few sneaky pics of everything looking nice before the onslaught of guests arrive.? Then let the kids to it, and just make sure I get plenty of snaps. Rather than running around like a headless chook which is what I usually do at kid's parties...
