The newspaper Haaretz reported today that an Israeli official on condition of anonymity, said Merkel had called Netanyahu 10 days ago amid a wave of reports of an imminent Israeli attack, to give a "clear message as to her opposition" to such action.
Merkel urged Netanyahu to "give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work," and warned of the consequences of such an attack for security in the Middle East.
A spokesman for Netanyahu refused to comment on the report or to confirm the conversation had taken place.
Israel and its main ally the United States accuse Iran of seeking to develop an atomic arsenal, but Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.
Netanyahu told a visiting US congressman last Friday that Iran was speeding up its quest for nuclear weapons in defiance of international sanctions.
The Haaretz article described the phone call as "exceptional" given the "almost complete disconnect" for two months between Merkel and Netanyahu after a sharp disagreement over Israeli settlements and the Palestinian issue.
Deputy government spokesman Georg Streiter told a Berlin news conference he could "not confirm (the information in) this article," reminding that Berlin did not believe in a military solution to the Iran nuclear issue.
Merkel also said an Israeli attack would have severe consequences for the European Union and that international sanctions, which were taking their toll on Iran, should be strengthened and given time to work, Haaretz wrote.
Iran has doubled its capacity to produce enriched uranium at its underground Fordo plant, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report released late yesterday.
The IAEA also accuses Iran of frustrating UN inspection of its Parchin plant, where it suspects tests of explosives that could be used in a nuclear warhead were carried out, by scrubbing it clean.
Netanyahu said yesterday he would present to the UN the "truth about the terror regime of Iran" at his General Assembly address in late September.

In the next few weeks and months we?re going to talk a lot about ?connecting? stuff.
We?re going to use the phrase ?Connecting security to the business? with almost annoying ?frequency. Not to be annoying, but because it?s important. ?Because it can change the way the business views security, and the way security views the business.
This begs a primer of sorts: What do we mean by all this ?connecting security to the business? talk?
What Dis-Connected Security Looks Like:
The other side of the coin demonstrates what ?connected security? is all about. It?s less?technical?than it is relational. It?s more about the business than it is about the technology or the threat-du-jour.
What Connected Security Looks Like:
That?s probably enough primer for now. The story will get clearer as we unravel more of it.
Happy Labor Day, everyone!

(NEWS RELEASE) -- Lola Arslanbekova had a match-high 20 kills and 16 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 upset win over instate rival #10 Kentucky Wednesday night before a record crowd of 5,007 in the KFC Yum! Center.
?
?I helped beat Kentucky as a freshman and now I helped beat Kentucky as a senior. It feels so good,? said U of L senior Lola Arslanbekova. ?It felt like we gained intensity as the match went on.?
?
The last Cardinal win against a ranked team was against #21 Cincinnati on Oct. 16, 2010 with the
last win against a top 10 team coming versus #9 Pepperdine Sept. 10, 2004. U of L improved to 3-1 with the 21-25, 25023, 25-15, 30-28 win. UK (3-1) suffered its first loss, despite outblocking the Cards but couldn?t overcome .156 hitting. U of L hit just .189 but outdug the Cats 80-76.?? U of L freshman setter Katie George came off the bench to notch 22 assists.
?
?Katie George knows no fear. She doesn?t know that she is a freshman. When she looks in the mirror she sees herself as 6-4.? We need a general out there to help us stay loose and confident,? said U of L head coach Anne Kordes.
?
The score was tied at 11 in the first set before UK went on a 7-2 run to go up 18-13 and force Kordes to call her second timeout.? The Cards battled back with a couple of runs to come within two at 23-21 and forced at Cat timeout. UK closed out the set with two straight for the 25-21 win.? Lola Arslanbekova had a set-high seven kills for the Cards and both teams notched three blocks apiece.
?
In the second set, U of L put together a 5-0 run early to take a 7-3 lead and spark a Cat timeout.? U of L spread the margin to five at 14-9 before the Cats came back with six straight to take the lead for the first time at 15-14 and spark a Cardinal timeout.? U of L regrouped and tied at 20. Two straight kills by Lola Arslanbekova pushed the score to 23-22.? UK scored on a blocking error before a Cat miss and a kill by Brooke Mattingly tipped the set to the Cards.? Gwen Rucker had the slide going to the tune of five kills.
?
The Cardinals carried their momentum into the third set, going up 6-1 early on.? The Cats had to call timeout when U of L pulled ahead by seven at 17-10.? UK was unable to regroup and U of L got to set point on a kill by Kaitlynn James. UK staved off set point twice but James connected on another for the 25-15 win.? U of L hitting warmed to .333 in the set, led by James? four kills.
?
There were 22 ties and 12 lead changes in the fourth set as both teams. U of L slogged to set and match point the first time on a kill by Tanya Lukyanenko and then after the Cats countered, Lola Arslanbekova got to the second match point at 26-25, but the Cats countered.? Then the Cats tied at 28 before Gwen Rucker bounced two straight for the win.

Robot and Frank sounds like a terrible movie. Set in the ?near future? about an old man living a lone in upstate New York along the Hudson River whose son buys him a robot that becomes his companion, Jake Schreier?s film has all the ingredients of a sappy, made-for Lifetime torture-bore. But that?s Robot and Frank?s great trick, the way it lowers your expectations before serving up a sensitive and thoughtful sci-fi parable about life and age, friendship and human purpose.
Frank Langella plays Frank, which should be your first indication that there is something worth looking for in this movie. He is slowly succumbing to dementia, half-living in the past, when his son, who lives hours away, purchases the robot for him as a surrogate helper and companion. At first Frank is stubbornly resistant to the idea, but then he begins to develop a rapport with the programmable home assistant. Sure it is convenient to have his house cleaned and food prepared by the machine, but what really sets off the relationship is Frank discovering that the robot has no legal or moral sensibility programmed into him. This is perks up Frank because the old guy used to be a master cat burglar ? what? ? and now he has the perfect accomplice. It a completely unforeseeable twist, the two set about planning heists.
As the human and humanoid begin to develop their partnership, Frank?s friends and family become concerned about his health, even though Frank hasn?t felt this good in years. Here we begin to recognize the familiar patterns of familial behavior, the way in which the young try to put-away ? or program ? the lives of the inconveniently elderly when they haven?t the time or the patience to devote themselves to cultivating dignifying relationships. Frank finds that kind of companionship, in an ironic and socially scathing twist, in his robot. It?s clever, and the film?s friendly tone is perfectly balanced, without leaning on the schmaltz. In doing so, Robert and Frank raises questions about purpose and life?s meaning, delivering a story about memory and aging that plays as a septuagenarian?s overdue and justified revolt of spirit.

Previous studies have hypothesized that low levels of the enzyme thymidylate synthase (TS) likely mark patients who will benefit from the drug pemetrexed but results have been inconclusive at best and at times contradictory. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study recently published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology provides an explanation why: only in combination with high levels of a second enzyme, FPGS, does low TS predict response to pemetrexed in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.
"The hope is that oncologists could test a patient for TS and FPGS levels and so discover if the patient should be treated with pemetrexed or if another therapy might be more appropriate," says the paper's first author, Daniel C. Christoph, MD, PhD, medical oncologist at the West German Cancer Center, working as an international postdoctoral researcher in the lab of CU Cancer Center investigator, Fred Hirsch, MD, PhD.
Pemetrexed works by inhibiting the enzyme TS, which cancer cells need in order to replicate their DNA. So it stands to reason that tumors already low in TS would be most affected by the drug blocking the remaining TS would effectively stop the ability of cancer cells to synthesize new DNA. However, Christoph and colleagues tested 84 samples of mesothelioma in which patients had been treated with pemetrexed and found that low levels of TS only in combination with concurrently high levels of FPGS predicted patients' response to the drug.
The study also explained the mechanism by which FPGS increases the clinical effectiveness of pemetrexed:
"High levels of FPGS allow pemetrexed to stay longer inside cells, giving the drug longer to work against TS," Christoph says. Of the samples tested, patients with low TS and high FPGS had more response to pemetrexed and longer durations of survival.
According to Christoph, the current study provides the preclinical work needed to justify exploring the predictive power of TS and FPGS in mesothelioma patients. A prospective observational study of these biomarkers could lead to their wide use in predicting patients' response to pemetrexed.

Graphic shows APGfK poll results on presidential candidate favorability
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? If the presidential election were held today, Romney and Obama would be more or less tied, the latest polls show. But on one voter test, Obama has a clear advantage:
Whom would you rather have a beer with?
Or, if you don't drink (as Romney doesn't), whom would you rather have a cup of coffee with? Or take with you on a road trip (with or without your dog)? Or invite over for dinner?
Simply put, there is a likability gap.
This may seem trivial compared to questions like, say, which candidate you think will better revive the economy or safeguard the nation's nuclear weapons. But election after election has demonstrated that how voters feel about their candidate matters. A lot. It buoyed Ronald Reagan and helped sink John Kerry.
Likability has become a political buzzword that stands for something deeper. More like affinity. Empathy. How well does he or she connect? How much does he understand people like me?
There are Republicans who think this will be the deciding issue for Mitt Romney. He has about as good a playing field as a challenger could hope for, yet has not broken past the president. The election, they believe, may well turn on whether Romney can use this week's convention and the fall debates to really connect with voters in a way he has not yet been able to.
Democrats see this as Obama's core asset. Even in these hard times, voters feel he gets their plight better than the rich guy does. Asked which candidate better understands the problems of people like you, Obama beats Romney among registered voters 51 to 36 percent in the latest AP/GfK poll. Some 53 percent of adults hold a "favorable" opinion of the president, compared with just 44 percent who view Romney favorably.
And that is a president who isn't actually all that touchy-feely himself, having at times been compared to the "Star Trek" alien Mr. Spock, who suppressed emotion in order to solve problems. In fact, Obama's personal ratings are lower than most presidential candidates in recent elections, notes polltaker Andrew Kohut. They are just better than Romney's.
That is Romney's challenge.
___
CAN HE persuade voters to feel comfortable enough with him to turn out Obama? Not just to agree with him on issues but to trust him with their futures? That is why likability is about a lot more than having a beer.
It is about addressing what The Economist, a business-oriented British newsmagazine, editorialized as their "main doubt" about Romney: "Nobody knows who this strange man really is."
One striking element of this long campaign is how little Romney did over years of campaigning to really introduce himself, apparently not wanting to distract from discussion of the weak economy.
But Romney and his campaign were on course to use this convention to "warm up" his image. The candidate and his wife, Ann, sat down with Fox News at their home in New Hampshire the other day.
The correspondent, Chris Wallace, shared their pancakes as Ann described how Mitt had ironed his own shirt just that morning. "I noticed he was doing the laundry last night," she disclosed.
For his part, Romney did what he could to address the issue: "Remember that Popeye line, 'I am what I am and that's all what I am.'" What voters really want, he says, is effective management of the economy and for that he is your man.
In another interview, published by Politico on Monday, Romney acknowledged his likability problem but blamed it on the waves of attack ads Obama and his allies have launched against him (although his personal ratings were low even before the barrage).
He tried to turn the issue around on Obama, calling him a nice guy but a failed president.
In other words, American public, you liked Obama as a candidate but are disappointed in him as a president, while I, Romney, may be disappointing as your candidate but will deliver as your president.
Jon Stewart scoffed when George W. Bush (at that point a teetotaler) was described as a guy you'd love to have a beer with. I don't want a president I can have a beer with, Stewart said, "I want my president to be the designated driver." Given the highway pileup the American economy has just been through, Stewart's quip isn't all that far from Romney's campaign argument.
But can likability or affinity be separated from issues and effectiveness? That is becoming one of the principal questions of this campaign.
The question is sometimes posed as if managing the economy, on which Romney scores better, is different from the personal qualities that Obama scores better on. Some Republicans argue that Obama's personal ratings are all that keep him afloat amid the economic wreckage.
But that misses the point, says one Democratic consultant. Those personal qualities may actually be a way some voters connect politics to their economic facts of life.
"If you are part of the working class and you believe that the deck has been stacked against people like you for a decade or so," this consultant said, "who is likely to be the more 'desirable' remedy for that ? the financial CEO who 'understands' the economy or the guy you think is fighting for people like you?"
Which is why fighting for you is an Obama campaign mantra.
___
IN TRYING to overcome this, Romney is banging into a pretty deep vein of American political feeling. Ever since Andrew Jackson let his supporters traipse mud through the White House, there has been a resistance to letting the patricians back in power.
It took a huge economic crisis for Americans to elect the Hudson valley gentryman, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Herbert Hoover in fact was a good man, just a failed president, which is exactly what Romney is trying to say about Obama.
Romney's team has been planning to use the convention to highlight Obama's failure, as they see it, without denying the president's likability ? and their own candidate's competence, as they see it, while acknowledging the need to humanize him.
This highlights the risk they have taken by waiting until so late in the campaign to try to personalize the candidate. Because Hurricane Isaac has intervened, in more ways than one.
On the obvious level, it has disrupted and overshadowed the convention so far. It has created a conversation about the last Republican administration's handling of a natural disaster when Romney would like to talk about the present Democratic administration's handling of the economy.
But as if to confirm that he is what he is (to channel Popeye again), the hurricane has created the kind of test for Romney that campaigns so often throw at candidates, a sudden change of terrain when the campaign was in the middle of doing something else.
These moments can be opportunities. What better chance to project empathy and connection than a looming threat to life and property? And Romney, Ann at his side, seemed to start out that way. The couple's thoughts, he said, were with the people in the storm's path, and he expressed hope that "they're spared any major destruction."
A more empathic politician might have left it at that, as his running mate, Paul Ryan, did. But Romney kept going, effusive about the convention and how it would go on despite the storm.
"I like my speech. I really like Ann's speech," he said. "Our sons are already in Tampa, and they say it's terrific there ? a lot of great friends. And we're looking forward to a great convention."
Which, if his ear for connecting with people is as tin as it seems to be there, might be somewhat less likely than he hopes.

As the Baker 5J School Board reviewed suggested policy changes from the Oregon School Boards Association last night, one theme became evident ? times are changing.? From cyberbullying to graduation requirements, the policy updates reflect legal, economic and social changes.
Concerns about harassment, intimidation, and bullying have led to policy changes for a number of years.? The newest modification is the addition of ?Teen Dating Violence,? with its definition, ?A pattern of behavior in which a person uses or threatens to use physical, mental or emotional abuse to control another person who is in a dating relationship with the person, where one or both persons are 13 to 19 years of age.?? The policy also includes requirements about prevention, reporting, and investigation, as well as a footnote defining ?sexual orientation.?
A policy on cyberbullying, which had to be added a few years ago has been tweeked to include community, parent, and staff involvement in policy compliance.?? A reference to ?social media? has been added, as well as adjustments to required student and staff training.
Policies regarding abuse of a child (formerly child abuse) and sexual conduct with students have also been updated.
References to charter schools, and regulations regarding them, are sprinkled throughout the policies.
The ?Graduation Requirements? policy reflects both a push for higher standards and an increase in options to fit a range of student situations and needs.? Science requirements are up from two to three credits.? A requirement combining career and technical education along with arts and languages jumped from one credit to three.? In response to the number of ELL (English Language Learner) students, those with limited English proficiency may demonstrate skills ?in a variety of settings, in the language of origin??? There are also provisions for ?modified diplomas,? ?extended diplomas? and ?alternative certificates? for some students.? While these terms were added earlier, some of the stipulations are new.
Educational records, especially those involving special education, are continually evolving.? This time adjustments include references to U.S. and state officials who, under certain circumstance, may have access to records for enforcement and compliance purposes.
Confidentiality continues to be a concern, so the policy on ?personally identifiable information? has undergone some adjustment.? One change is a reference to ?biometric record?, which presumably refers to such things as DNA tests and eye scans.
A school transportation policy included the following change: ?A person over 40 pounds or who has reached the upper weight limit for the forward-facing car seat must use a booster seat until four feet nine inches or age eight and the adult belt properly fits.?
In a policy on wellness, ?Nutrition Education? became ?Nutrition Promotion and Nutrition Education.?? It also includes a reduction in wording (which is unusual) on physical education and activity.? Instead of specifying required numbers of minutes for p.e., the new policy says ?Physical activity should be included in a school?s daily education from grads pre-K through 12.?? The push for required p.e. time in the last version, seems to have been tempered due to financial and logistical constraints.

If in the midst of the back to school craziness, you?re looking for ways to give your kids a green start to school, natural living expert Jen Boulden of The Well Daily, offers up these easy tips to packing a greener school lunch.
Eat well but waste not
According to Boulden, each child who brings a lunch to school every day generates an estimated 67 pounds of waste per school year. The good news is packing a more eco-conscious lunch is a convenient endeavor if you take advantage of the many earth-friendly lunch options available at your local supermarket, health food store, or online. ?A greener lunch is better for the planet, your wallet and your family?s health. Boulden recommends the following reusable bags, bottles, and lunch tips.
Unzip(loc) bags
?Plastic baggies can hang around landfills for up to 1,000 years,? says Boulden. ?Try reusable alternatives, like Wrap-N-Mat, a reusable sandwich wrap that opens into a placemat.? If 10,000 people used alternatives to sandwich bags every day for a year, we?d keep 2.5 million plastic baggies out of landfills.?
Reusable bottles
Boulden encourages parents to just say no to plastic water bottles. ?For drinks, use a stainless steel container like Contigo?s kid-friendly cups,? she adds. As a big bonus, you?ll be teaching your kids the importance of choosing reusable bottles over disposable bottles that just end up in landfills.
Earth-friendly utensils
?Instead of plastic utensils, throw in some To-Go Ware reusable bamboo utensils and a cloth napkin,? Boulden suggests. Just make sure that your kids know to bring the utensils and napkin home.
Green lunch bags
Did you know that many plastic lunch boxes are made with the chemical PVC? ?PVC is linked to chronic diseases such as learning and developmental disabilities, obesity, asthma and cancer to name a few,? warns Boulden. ?Opt for a sustainable lunch bag by a company called Fluf, a recycled canvas Ecobag, and a lunch box made from recycled water bottles.?
Bulk foods
Conveniently packaged foods may be easier to throw in a school lunch, but they are more expensive and create more waste. ?When buying food that you?ll be using for the kid?s lunches, save cash and the planet by buying in bulk,? advises Boulden. ?Then, pack small amounts in a reusable container each day.?
Being green is easy when you?re prepared and plan ahead. Take the time to invest in reusable school lunch items and you?ll save money, show kindness to the earth, and promote your child?s health.

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Jay Leno used his first "Tonight Show" monologue since layoffs at the show to blame NBC and corporate parent Comcast for the job losses.
"Welcome to 'The Tonight Show,' or as Comcast calls us, 'The Expendables,'" he said Monday.
The show dismissed about 20 staffers last week, and Leno agreed to take a sizable paycut to prevent further job losses.
"As you may have heard, our parent company has downsized 'The Tonight Show.' And we've consistently been number one in the ratings," Leno continued in the monologue. "And if you know anything about our network, that kind of thing is frowned upon."
He added: "I have more bad news: turns out we've been taken over by Bain Capital. ... I knew something was going on. Friday morning I woke up and there was a peacock head in my bed."
NBC has declined to provide a reason for the layoffs. The show has slipped in the ratings since the messy exit of Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno's reinstatement as its host in 2010, but it remains the No. 1 show in late night.

The world of technology is ever changing and in fact, what could be the seen as the latest of technology today may be considered immediately as obsolete after only a few months.
Hence, it?s no wonder that people who were once ignorant of the trends in the computer industry are now slowly waking up to the reality that they need to upgrade their computers if they don?t want to be left behind and enjoy to the fullest the pleasure that the newest computers can bring them.
If you?re one of those people who are knowledgeable enough about computers but uninterested in having upgrades until now, this is the guide that you will need and shall help you purchase the best computer hardware for your needs.
And speaking of needs, that?s always the first thing we should discuss. Before you start upgrading your computer, it?s imperative to know what your future and better computer would be used for. That way, we?ll able to gear ourselves towards the right computer hardware. A computer that shall be mainly used for word processing, for example, would not need a high end video card but it may need a hard drive with larger than usual disk space if there are millions of files to be saved.
Mouse and Keyboard
Let?s start with something easy first, alright? If and when you?re shopping for a mouse, it?s always better to purchase an optical mouse with scroll rather than a ball mouse, with or without one. An optical mouse is not only easier to use, it?s also easier to clean. And naturally, a mouse with a scroll is better than one without.
For keyboards, it?s better to purchase a multi-media keyboard especially when you also tend to use your computer to listen to music or watch videos.
Optical Drives
When it comes to optical drives, we suggest that you purchase a DVD burner rather than just a simple CD Writer because everything that the latter can do, the former can do as well and more. When purchasing a DVD burner, never forget to check the speed it uses for writing (16x is preferable) and if it is compatible with all disk formats.
Video Cards
It?s quite wonderful whenever you start shopping for video cards because you?ll be able to easily discern the differences from one model to another. There are video cards that are of superior quality but affordably priced so don?t go for the most expensive immediately. Browse around and who knows what you?ll be able to get.
Take your time shopping for computer parts and have fun!

If a wireless light bulb wasn't quite the Jetson's style future you were hoping for, perhaps Panasonic's planned expansion of its smart home appliances will better scratch that itch. From next month, there'll be an Android app to let you remotely operate appliances, view energy savings and program settings via NFC. Hardware-wise, the electronics giant is introducing connected air conditioners, refrigerators, washer-dryers as well as smaller devices such as blood pressure monitors and calorie meters. Along with remote control, there appears to be some supportive cloud-based services too, such as reporting device faults to customer service and generating reports (from the healthcare products). When can you get a taste of the future? September 25th if you live in Orbit City Japan. As for the rest of the world? We'll just have to be patient.

A car bomb exploded Monday, killing eight people and wounding 50 others in a city in south-east Turkey, the mayor of Gaziantap, Asim Guezelbey, told local television.
The powerful blast went off close to a police station, setting fire to several vehicles including a city bus carrying three of the victims, the mayor told NTV news channel which broadcast images of firefighters racing to put out the flames.
No one has claimed responsibility for the explosion which occurred on the second day of the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the holy Muslim month of fasting.
But it came amid intensified clashes between the Kurdish rebels and Turkish troops in the volatile south-east region.
Gaziantap, a main city in the region, has so far been spared the violence wrought by rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) since they began their battle for autonomy in the Kurdish-majority south-east in 1984.
In a separate incident Monday in the south-east province of Hakkari bordering Iraq and Iran, two soldiers were killed when a landmine detonated through remote control by PKK rebels blew up, authorities said.
The conflict with the PKK, which is considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey and much of the international community, has claimed some 45,000 lives over nearly three decades.
Ankara launched an all-out offensive last month against the PKK after a series of assaults against troops in the south-east. At least 115 rebels have been killed since the offensive began on July 23, Turkish authorities said.
But the rebel activity appeared to have only intensified.
Earlier this month, Kurdish rebels stormed a Turkish army post on the Iraq border, triggering fighting that killed 22 people.
Also earlier this month, the PKK abducted an ethnic Kurd lawmaker -- later freed -- in the southeastern city of Tunceli, marking the first time they kidnapped a member of the Turkish parliament since 1984.
The incident followed the abduction of three soldiers in another part of the region.
Kurdish rebels frequently kidnap workers, soldiers and local authorities to bargain for the release of captured rebels, and free most hostages without harm.
Turkey also regularly bombs suspected Kurdish rebel hideouts in northern Iraq, with both Baghdad and the government in the autonomous Kurdish region forced to accept the military strikes.

Nasa's Curiosity rover has zapped its first Martian rock.
The robot fired its ChemCam laser at a tennis-ball-sized stone lying about 2.5m away on the ground.
The brief but powerful burst of light from the instrument vaporised the surface of the rock, revealing details of its basic chemistry.
This was just target practice for ChemCam, proving it is ready to begin the serious business of investigating the geology of the Red Planet.
It is part of a suite of instruments on the one-tonne robot, which landed two weeks ago in a deep equatorial depression known as Gale Crater.
Over the course of one Martian year, Curiosity will try to determine whether past environments at its touchdown location could ever have supported life.
The US-French ChemCam instrument will be a critical part of that investigation, helping to select the most interesting objects for study.
The inaugural target of the laser was a 7cm-wide rock dubbed "Coronation" (previously N165).
It had no particular science value, and was expected to be just another lump of ubiquitous Martian basalt, a volcanic rock.
Its appeal was the nice smooth face it offered to the laser.
ChemCam zapped it with 30 pulses of infrared light during a 10-second period.
Each pulse delivered to a tiny spot more than a million watts of power for about five billionths of a second.
The instrument observed the resulting spark through a telescope; the component colours would have told scientists which atomic elements were present.
"We got a great spectrum of Coronation - lots of signal," said ChemCam principal investigator Roger Wiens of Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico.
"Our team is both thrilled and working hard, looking at the results. After eight years building the instrument, it's pay-off time."
One aspect being considered by the team is whether the signal changed slightly as the laser burrowed through any exterior layers that might have coated Coronation.
"Coatings can tell you about, say, the weather or what has happened to a rock through the eons," Dr Wiens told the BBC last week.
"We will look at the first few laser shots and see if there is any difference as we move further into the rock."
Continue reading the main storyThe British company e2v provided the imaging sensor behind the ChemCam telescope that routes the light signal, via optical fibres, to the onboard spectrometer which does the chemical analysis.
The charge-coupled device (CCD) was specially prepared for the instrument to increase its sensitivity.
"The scientists always want to see more, but they want to see more without cost to performance," said e2v's Jon Kemp.
"Our process was able to almost double the signal to noise ratio."
The first science target for ChemCam will be bedrock exposed on the ground next to Curiosity by the rocket-powered crane used to lower the vehicle to the crater floor on 6 August (GMT).
Exhaust from this descent stage scattered surface grit and pebbles to reveal a harder, compact material underneath.
The crane made four scour marks in the ground - two either side of the rover. These have been dubbed Burnside, Goulburn, Hepburn and Sleepy Dragon - names taken from ancient rock formations in Canadian North America.
Goulburn Scour will be zapped by ChemCam once the mission team has reviewed fully the Coronation performance and results.

Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp in Cannes, France, in 2010.
By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis were a notoriously private couple during their 14 years together, rarely speaking about their relationship. The couple split in June after months of speculation that there was trouble between them, and now Paradis is breaking her silence, speaking out about her thoughts on love, fame and dating.
"Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life," Paradis tells Harper's Bazaar in the September issue. "Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it."
Paradis also make comments that allude to still being in love despite her relationship to Depp no longer being successful. "When you meet the love of your life, it's just obvious and natural and easier," she told the magazine. But, "you keep learning all the time. Sometimes you could be in an unhappy relationship; you are very much in love with someone, but it's making you unhappy and you think things can change and you can work it out."

Paradis makes no mention of starting to date again, but she did tell Harper's that she's got a type. "Well, my type is obviously creative," she said. "Creative, with burning eyes and a pretty mouth."
