Gold, silver, and real estate will save you - CodyWillard.com

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 6.14.59 PM

Living in NYC for the last fourteen years, I?m the son of a small business veterinarian and high school English teacher who are both still in Ruidoso NM along with much of my family.? My first job was literally cleaning crap for a dollar an hour, cleaning cages, walking the dogs, and holding the animals for exams when I was six years old. In the years since, I?ve been a busboy, a mini golf clerk, a civil engineer runner, a walk-on hoopster on a Top 25 NCAA team and a registered real estate appraiser?and that was before I had even graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in economics.

My first job in NYC after I came out here on a one-way ticket to, as I?d told my parents, ?Become a Wall Street Rock Star? was at the first Starbucks in NYC, back in 1996, as a barista.? I then kept hounding the 73-year old author of a book I?d picked up at the bookstore called ?Confessions of a Stockbroker? til he gave me a job stapling papers and answering the phone. A year later, I?d become his first partner in his 40-plus year career, but I walked away from the offer and went to Lithuania to write the great American novel and see what was almost the birth of capitalism in a new country.? I finished the novel, but after 93 rejection letters, I took a job as an analyst at a company that creates tech companies.

A year of riding the wave to the top of and the bottom of the dot com bubble, I left to become the head of wholesale services at a telecom company.? A few months into that job, I personally advised the CEO to shut down my division and lay me off because the telecom bubble was deflating all around us.? A week after that I was running from the collapse of the World Trade Center as it came down on top of me and my apartment in Battery Park City.? Without a home and a job, I founded a tech stock newsletter and website and got a break when Jim Cramer wrote on his blog on TheStreet.com that they were looking for writers.? After they took over my newsletter, and with Jim?s guidance, I started a tech hedge fund, which is just a collection of people?s money that I tried to make into more money.

Having been lucky enough to literally launch the hedge fund just 10 days before the stock market bottomed in October 2002, I was also lucky enough to have bought Apple at $7 per share back in March 2003 just weeks before they launched the original iPod, and also to have bought Google the day it came public.? Jim also helped me get exposure by putting me on his CNBC TV show a couple of times, which led to me doing more CNBC appearances, especially on Larry Kudlow?s show.? Along the way, I wrote monthly opinion columns for the Financial Times and became a professor of Revolutionomics at Seton Hall.? I also began to do TV appearances on other stations, and eventually was offered a job as an anchor on the then-about-to-be-launched Fox Business Network.

After closing down my hedge fund literally three weeks before the market topped, I anchored 528 business talk shows out of the Waldorf-Astoria?s Bull & Bear bar, during which we saw the stock market crash 60% and the trillion dollar bailouts of Wall Street, the car companies, and nationalization of almost the entire mortgage industry when the government took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Nowadays, I write TradingWithCody.com and am the CEO of WallStreetAllStars.com, am the author of the Revolution Investing subscription newsletter published by Marketwatch.com, which also publishes my blog, The Cody Word, and I also play shows and release singles with my rap/rock/folk band, The Muddy Souls.

Lawyer revises testimony on 'This Is It' contract

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A corporate lawyer for concert giant AEG Live LLC has revised his testimony and now says the tour director of Michael Jackson's ill-fated "This Is It" concerts had a signed contract.

AEG Live General Counsel Shawn Trell told jurors on Tuesday that he had forgotten that Kenny Ortega was working under a signed contract.

Trell testified on Monday that Ortega was working under agreements reached through a series of emails, not a formalized contract.

An attorney for Michael Jackson's mother on Monday compared Ortega's emails to messages between the promoter and the singer's personal physician laying out how he would be compensated.

Trell disputed that the situations of Ortega and Conrad Murray were similar.

Katherine Jackson is suing AEG, claiming it hired Murray without properly investigating him.

AEG denies it hired Murray.

Fossil brain teaser: New study reveals patterns of dinosaur brain development

May 20, 2013 ? A new study conducted at the University of Bristol and published online today in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology sheds light on how the brain and inner ear developed in dinosaurs.

Stephan Lautenschlager from Bristol's School of Earth Sciences, together with Tom H?bner from the Nieders?chsische Landesmuseum in Hannover, Germany, picked the brains of 150 million year old dinosaurs.

The two palaeontologists studied different fossils of the Jurassic dinosaur Dysalotosaurus lettowvorbecki: a very young (juvenile) individual of approximately three years of age and a fully grown specimen of more than 12 years of age.

Stephan Lautenschlager, lead author of the paper, said: "The two different growth stages of Dysalotosaurus provided a unique opportunity to study their brain, and how it developed during the growth of the animal."

Using high-resolution CT scanning and 3D computer imaging, it was possible to reconstruct and visualise the brain and inner ear of Dysalotosaurus lettowvorbecki -- a small, plant-eating dinosaur, which lived 150 million years ago, in what is now Tanzania.

Co-author Tom H?bner said: "Well-preserved fossil material, which can be used to reconstruct the brain anatomy is usually rare. Thus, we were fortunate to have different growth stages available for our study."

By looking at the brain and inner ear anatomy, the two researchers found that the brain of Dysalotosaurus underwent considerable changes during growth -- most likely as a response to environmental and metabolic requirements. However, important parts responsible for the sense of hearing and cognitive processes were already well developed in the young individual.

Stephan Lautenschlager said: "Our study shows that the brain was already well-developed in the young dinosaurs and adapted perfectly to interact with their environment and other individuals."

This study has important ramifications for the understanding of how parts of the brain developed in dinosaurs. However, further research into that field is necessary to investigate if the pattern of brain development in individual dinosaurs is also reflected in a large scale trend during the more than 150 million years of dinosaur evolution.

The study was funded by a research fellowship to Stephan Lautenschlager from the German Volkswagen Foundation.

I can't help you? - The Best Fitness and Weight Loss Group ...

My heart was racing, my throat was tight, my ears were ringing and that little vein in my forehead was standing at attention?

At least that?s how it felt. I was listening to this:

?Uncle Steve, I just want to tone. I don?t want to get all big and bulky, I just want to lose some weight.? What really happens2

Rubbing the inside of the back of head with my palms pressed against my eyelids didn?t seem to stop the anguish, so I stopped, looked up and said, ?I can?t help you. You?ll need to go somewhere else for that.?

In the words of Yoda, ?Stunned she was!?

I?ve had this conversation with her, and a number of other clients, over the years and for some reason it just doesn?t seem to sink in?so I?m putting it down in written form.

I?m Not THAT Guy

First and foremost, let?s define what it means to lose ?weight?, shall we?

When the body loses weight, it loses, or potentially loses:

  1. Fluids
  2. Bone mass
  3. Brain mass
  4. Muscle (yes, the heart is a muscle)
  5. Vital nutrients, minerals and enzymes from the system
  6. Strength
  7. Stamina
  8. A healthy look

MMmmm?it all sounds so appealing?

If someone wants to lose ?weight? they merely need to be more selective about the quantity of food they ingest each day. Doesn?t even need to be good quality food, just limit the number of calories to below maintenance levels and VIOLA?weight loss occurs!

Of course, it all comes with all of the aforementioned benefits in varying levels and degrees.

Now of course, if one has a desire look lean, sexy and good in a swim suit on the beach, that is a whole ?nuther matter!

This is where successful fat loss, combined with resistance training to elicit a stimulus for the attainment of firm, well shaped and defined tissue (please, feel free to substitute the word ?muscle? for ?tissue?, then look at the photo above to see how good it can look) through sound and supportive nutritional measure combined with solid training practices come in handy.

You see, I can?t?or more specifically, I WON?T?help someone to lose weight. That is irresponsible and unprofessional.

I will help someone to lose FAT, to earn the body they want to live in and to achieve a level of successful health, fitness and wellness they can live with for a long time.

Like Karen here:Karen before and after

Karen has been working hard for the last 6 weeks to get married soon.

She stuck with the plan, lifted hard, ate right and is reaping the rewards of her efforts.

She?s down from a size 8 to a size 2.

No big, bulky muscle. Just lean and firm with a ?ready for the beach? body.

You want some of this?

Come get some?

Steve

Huge tornado touches down near Oklahoma City

Tornado damage seen in Moore, Okla., May 20, 2013. (KFOR-TV)

A devastating, mile-wide tornado touched down near Oklahoma City on Monday, leveling homes, businesses and schools in the suburb of Moore. There were no immediate reports of fatalities or injuries.

The funnel cloud could be seen for miles, creating a debris field several miles wide. Weather officials estimated the strength of the tornado to be an F4 or F5.

The Oklahoma House of Representatives canceled its afternoon sessions so lawmakers and staffers could take shelter, the Associated Press said.

The tornado comes a day after powerful storms ripped through the center of the country, spawning at least a dozen tornadoes, killing two people and causing extensive damage from Georgia to Minnesota.

According to the Oklahoma state medical examiner, the two victims in Sunday's storms?Glen Irish, 79, and Billy Hutchinson, 76?were from hard-hit Shawnee. At least 39 other people were injured on Sunday, Oklahoma emergency management director Albert Ashwood said.

Bernard Baruch's 10 Rules of Investing | The Reformed Broker

  • Joshua M Brown
  • May 19th, 2013

You want someone to emulate?

Bernard Baruch (August 19, 1870 ? June 20, 1965) was the son of a South Carolina physician whose family moved to New York City when he was eleven year old. By his mid-twenties, he is able to buy an $18,000 seat on the exchange with his winnings and commissions from being a broker. By age 30, he is a millionaire and is known all over The Street as "The Lone Wolf".

In his two-volume 1957 memoirs,?My Own Story, Baruch left us with the following timeless rules for playing the game:

?Being so skeptical about the usefulness of advice, I have been reluctant to lay down any ?rules? or guidelines on how to invest or speculate wisely. Still, there are a number of things I have learned from my own experience which might be worth listing for those who are able to muster the necessary self-discipline:?

1. Don?t speculate unless you can make it a full-time job.

2. Beware of barbers, beauticians, waiters ? of anyone ? bringing gifts of ?inside? information or ?tips.?

3. Before you buy a security, find out everything you can about the company, its management and competitors, its earnings and possibilities for growth.

4. Don?t try to buy at the bottom and sell at the top. This can?t be done ? except by liars.

5. Learn how to take your losses quickly and cleanly. Don?t expect to be right all the time. If you have made a mistake, cut your losses as quickly as possible.

6. Don?t buy too many different securities. Better have only a few investments which can be watched.

7. Make a periodic reappraisal of all your investments to see whether changing developments have altered their prospects.

8. Study your tax position to know when you can sell to greatest advantage.

9. Always keep a good part of your capital in a cash reserve. Never invest all your funds.

10. Don?t try to be a jack of all investments. Stick to the field you know best.

Baruch would later go on from Wall Street to Washington DC as an advisor to both Woodrow Wilson and to FDR during World War II.

Later, he became known as the Park Bench Statesman, owing to his fondness for discussing policy and politics with his acquaintances outdoors.

He lived til a few days shy of his 95th birthday in 1965. You could do worse than to invest and live based on these simple truths.

Iraq: Car bombs in Basra kill at least 10 people

BASRA, Iraq (AP) ? Iraqi officials say two car bombings in the southern city of Basra have killed at least 10 people and wounded 27.

A police officer says the two parked car bombs went off early on Monday morning near a restaurant and a bus station. A doctor in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts but such large-scale bombings bear the hallmarks of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Work pools for big jackpots are often fraught with controversy, resulting in lawsuits, broken friendships and worse: delayed payouts. (AP Photo/Nati Harnik/File)

In workplaces across the nation, Americans are inviting their colleagues to chip in $2 for a Powerball ticket and a shared daydream.

The office lottery pool is a way to improve your odds and have a little fun with co-workers. And besides, who wants to be the only person at work the next day when everyone quits?

With $600 million on the line, this is the time to play. It's the largest-ever Powerball jackpot and the second-largest world jackpot of all time. And it could get even bigger before Saturday's drawing.

The Multi-State Lottery Association recognizes the popularity of work pools, especially when the stakes are so high. In the last few years, lottery officials have offered tips for organizing pools.

"The appeal is they can stretch the value of their $2," said Norm Lingle, executive director of the South Dakota Lottery and chairman of the Powerball Executive Committee.

But it's important to be careful. Workplace pools that yield big jackpots sometimes result in lawsuits, broken friendships and delayed payouts. Follow these steps to make sure you're ready to divide your winnings.

___

KNOW THE RULES

Lottery officials encourage pools organizers to lay down rules, put them in writing and distribute the details to all participants before the winning numbers are drawn.

Linda Golden, of Gettysburg, Pa., may set the bar for how to manage an office lottery pool. An employee for more than three decades at a printing company called Quad Graphics, Golden has organized a pool for years and requires everyone to sign in, showing they contributed. She had 14 co-workers on board when the jackpot pushed past $200 million in late March.

They only won $4. But instead of distributing what would have amounted to about 27 cents a person, Golden bought more tickets for the $1 million Powerball drawing on March 27 without telling the others. She hit the jackpot and never gave a thought to keeping the winnings all for herself. One co-worker was a woman who used a walker because of a foot problem. Another had just been to the emergency room because of a knee problem.

"I say it over and over again. That ticket we won was meant for those two ladies and the rest of (the group) is there for the ride," she said.

After taxes, each person ended up with about $50,000.

Golden's winning ticket has only stirred more excitement in her office for Saturday's giant Powerball jackpot. She estimated she had 26 people in her pool this time.

"This time, it's starting to take up so much of my time. So many people wanted to join," she said. "It's kind of getting out of hand."

In Collinsville, Ill., just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, seven firefighters were pooling their money for a $14 ticket that offered seven plays.

Mike Harris keeps the pool in order by distributing a photocopy of the ticket to each contributor and scrawling their names on the handout. To him, it's just common sense.

"There's no confusion," he said. "This is the ticket we have."

___

THE GOOD AND THE UGLY

If you're the person buying the tickets, make sure co-workers are aware if you plan to buy personal tickets on the side.

That didn't happen in Indianapolis, where a hairdresser became involved in a lawsuit with seven of her former co-workers.

Christina Shaw claims the winning ticket wasn't part of an office pool. The hairstylists say they had all verbally agreed to share any winnings from any tickets purchased at the same time as those for the pool.

"People don't realize that this is serious business," said New Jersey attorney Rubin Sinins. He represented five construction workers who claimed a colleague cheated them out of a share of a multimillion-dollar lottery jackpot. The man claimed he won the 2009 jackpot on a personal ticket ? not with a ticket he bought as part a lottery pool.

There's also an Ohio man who missed his weekly lottery pool because of an injury, then later sued his co-workers for a chance to share their winning $99 million jackpot.

"When you go in with people in an agreement that involves potentially millions of dollars, you're talking about a contract," Sinins said. If a ticket wins, "then issues can arise as to who's actually part of the pool, who's entitled to the money, what proofs there are to establish that."

___

PLANNING FOR THE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE

It's smart to plan. But it also can feel silly to plan for something that is nearly impossible to win. Or is it?

The chances of winning the latest jackpot are about 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many ways a person can combine the numbers to make a play. But Sinins said it's still important to consider what would happen if you somehow overcame the odds.

"If there was no chance, you wouldn't do it," he said. "And you obviously want to do it. So you want to make sure that there's no problem afterward."

Chefs cook, raise money for Boston bombing victims

BOSTON (AP) ? Boston Marathon bombing victims joined hundreds of first responders and well-wishers at Fenway Park as dozens of top chefs served fine food and drinks from concession stands in a project intended to raise money for those killed and wounded in the twin explosions.

The Boston Bites Back event at the Boston Red Sox's home, the oldest baseball park in the major leagues, was held Wednesday, a month after the April 15 attack in which two pressure cookers filled with explosives and shrapnel exploded near the marathon's finish line. Three people were killed and more than 260 others were injured.

About 100 chefs served fine wine and fancy food to attendees as they attempted to raise $1 million for One Fund Boston, a charity set up to help the bombing victims, many of whom lost limbs.

Emergency workers, bombing victims and government officials were among those feasting on some 60,000 hors d'oeuvres, including ceviche shots, seared duck breast, oysters, foie gras, spring seafood salad, pastrami sandwiches and other dishes. It was quite a change from the usual pretzels, hot dogs and candy offered at the ballpark.

Bombing victim Lee Ann Yanni, who broke one of her legs in the attack and was still on crutches, attended the event with her husband, Nicholas Yanni, who also was injured.

"As somebody that was significantly injured but luckier than some, it really, truly means a lot that other people are willing to help us just to get back to normal life," Lee Ann Yanni said.

The chefs, who donated the food and wine, cooked and served guests for four hours from behind Fenway's concession stands and at tables throughout the Big Concourse and the park's Budweiser deck.

Five thousand tickets were available at $200 each, entitling people to eat and drink as much as they wished; 200 VIP tickets were offered at $1,000 each, with access to a more intimate and exclusive gathering at the ballpark's EMC Club. An online auction before the event featured packages including unique dining experiences from top chefs and personal shopping with fashion expert Gretta Monahan.

Boston Bites Back was spearheaded by celebrity chefs Ken Oringer, who owns six popular restaurants in the city, and Ming Tsai, a creator of the East-meets-West movement and a media producer. Others behind the initiative include Gov. Deval Patrick, the Red Sox and food service provider Aramark.

Organizers described Boston Bites Back as a "once-in-a-lifetime tasting event" that demonstrates the city's unrelenting spirit while raising money for those affected by the bombings.

The victims have suffered and struggled since the attack, Oringer said.

"A lot of them lost limbs, a lot of them are not gonna be able to work again, a lot of them have families," he said at the event. "We just want to do what we can as a community ... to help them out."

Ming said that Boston Bites Back was not a celebration but an opportunity to share great food and drink, thank first responders and "show these survivors how much we love them."

"One thing that's cool about this event at Fenway Park: we are cooking in the concession stands," Ming said. "Here, for example, from Blue Dragon, we're doing this braised octopus with Ma-La oil with vinegar fries. And over there, we have lobster corn dogs and lobster BLTs, we have pizza, we have seared foie gras. We have amazing food that's never been served at Fenway Park."

That excitement was shared by Lee Ann Yanni.

"I've tried the asparagus soup and it was actually excellent," she said. "I'm highly looking forward to the desserts because that's my thing."

For Laura Wilson-Mills, a nurse who treated bombing victims at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston Bites Back gave her a new perspective and a healthy dose of satisfaction.

"To see them now," she said, "they are real, they have real lives, they have families. ... It also makes me feel good that I've helped not only the patient, but their family."

Facebook, Twitter apps come to Glass, Google's wearable computer

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Social networking services Facebook Inc and Twitter are coming to Google Glass, the wearable computer made by the Internet search company.

Google Inc announced on Thursday a half-dozen apps specially designed to work on its Glass devices. News network CNN, fashion magazine Elle, as well as online apps Tumblr and Evernote were among the half-dozen new apps for Glass unveiled during Google's annual developer conference in San Francisco.

Google Glass is a stamp-sized electronic screen mounted on the left side of a pair of eyeglass frames which can record video, access email and messages and retrieve information from the Web.

Google began distributing the devices last month to a limited number of developers, but it has yet to specify when a version will be available for consumers or at what price.

The futuristic-looking devices have been a common sight at the Google conference this week, with many of the attendees and staffers wearing Glass. But Google executives gave Glass short shrift during the more than three-hour keynote talks on Wednesday, barely mentioning Glass among the litany of new products and services discussed on stage.

Do you currently use a commercial deodoriser? graph of japanese statisticsIt?s been quite a while since the last time I translated a DIMSDRIVE survey, so I?m quite happy to present this one from them on deodorising sprays, which you should note excludes personal hygene-related products!

Demographics

Between the 9th and 15th of April 2013 7,089 members of the DIMSDRIVE monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 58.4% of the sample were male, 0.4% in their teens, 4.4% in their twenties, 18.6% in their thirties, 30.6% in their forties, 25.7% in their fifties, and 20.3% aged sixty or older.

My wife uses a lot of them every day! When we hang our quilts out to air, we use one which is supposed to prevent pollen sticking to the covers, so I suppose that?s OK, but just about every fabric surface in the house also gets sprayed with various potions that don?t seem to do much except make the floor a little sticky! It also seems a cop-out on the housework; shall I do some detailed cleaning, or shall I just squirt something over everything that doesn?t move?

Frog once imported for pregnancy testing brought deadly amphibian disease to US

May 15, 2013 ? African frogs, originally imported for early 20th century pregnancy tests, carried a deadly amphibian disease to the U.S., according to a new study published today in the journal PLOS ONE.

African Clawed Frogs have long been suspected of introducing a harmful fungus called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis or Bd to new populations that haven't been exposed to this pathogen before. The fungus has led to the recent decline or extinction of 200 frog species worldwide. A previous study found that the earliest case of Bd in the world was found in African Clawed Frogs in their native South Africa in 1934, but until now no research has tested for the disease among this species in populations that have become established in the U.S.

"We found that African Clawed Frogs that have been introduced in California are carrying this harmful fungus," said SF State biologist Vance Vredenburg. "This is the first evidence of the disease among introduced feral populations in the U.S., and it suggests these frogs may be responsible for introducing a devastating, non-native disease to amphibians in the United States."

From the 1930s to 1950s, thousands of African Clawed Frogs were exported across the world for use in pregnancy tests, scientific research and the pet trade. These frogs will ovulate when injected with a pregnant woman's urine.

"Today, these frog populations are often found in or near urban areas, probably because hospitals released them into the wild when new pregnancy testing methods were invented in the 1960s," Vredenburg said.

Named for the claws they use to catch prey, these greenish-grey frogs live in pools and streams and have established feral populations in the U.S., including in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

African Clawed Frogs are potentially potent carriers of the Bd fungus because they can be infected for long periods of time without dying, allowing them to pass it on to more vulnerable species.

"It's amazing that more than half a century after being brought to California, these frogs are still here, and they still carry this highly infectious disease," said Vredenburg, associate professor of biology at SF State. "This implies that there must be a stable relationship between the pathogen and the frogs, whereas there are other frog species, for example in the Sierra Nevada, which have been wiped out by the pathogen."

For this latest study, Vredenburg and colleagues tested museum specimens at the California Academy of Sciences. They assessed the prevalence of the disease by swabbing DNA from the skin of preserved African Clawed Frog specimens that were collected from wild populations in California between 2001 and 2010.

They also tested archived specimens collected in Africa between 1871 and 2010 and found evidence confirming that Bd was present among indigenous populations of this species before they were exported worldwide.

Although no longer used in pregnancy testing, African Clawed Frogs are still imported to the U.S. for use in biomedical and basic science research. Because of their suspected role as a carrier of the Bd fungus and other potential pathogens, eleven states in the U.S. have already restricted the importation of these frogs, for example by requiring special permits and not allowing them to be sold as pets.

"Back in the 1960s, African Clawed Frogs were kind of ignored in terms of conservation research but now the damage has been done," Vredenburg said. "Now, we need to be cautious about other introduced species, including those in the pet and food trade. There could be other animals out there that are carrying diseases that we don't even know about yet."

"Prevalence of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in Xenopus Collected in Africa (1871-2000) and in California (2001-2010)" was published May 15, 2013 in PLOS ONE. Vredenburg co-authored the paper with Samuel V. G. McNally, a graduate student in Vredenburg's lab, and Stephen A. Felt, Erica C. Morgan, Sabrina Wilson, and Sherril L. Green from Stanford University.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

Egypt militants planned to hit U.S., French embassies

CAIRO (Reuters) - An al Qaeda-linked militant cell detained in Egypt was planning suicide attacks on the French and U.S. embassies, the state news agency MENA reported on Wednesday, quoting investigators.

Authorities on Saturday announced the capture of three Egyptians with links to al Qaeda, saying they had been found in possession of 10 kg (22 pounds) of explosive materials.

"The investigations revealed that the suspects were intending to carry out terrorist bomb operations inside Egypt via suicide operations, penetrating the security cordon in front of the American and French embassies with a car bomb," MENA said, citing a source in the state security prosecutor's office.

MENA said the suspects had escaped from prison during the uprising that swept Hosni Mubarak from power in 2011.

Prior to that, one of them had been extradited to Egypt from Algeria and another had been extradited from Iran, where he had gone to join groups fighting U.S. forces in Iraq and Gulf states, MENA reported.

He was caught by Iran in 2006 and deported to Egypt.

France's military intervention in Mali was cited as the men's motive for the planned attack on the French embassy.

Bacterium counteracts 'coffee ring effect'

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Ever notice how a dried coffee stain has a thicker outer rim, while the middle of the stain remains almost unsoiled? This 'coffee ring effect' also occurs in other materials. Researchers from the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at KU Leuven have now discovered how to counteract coffee rings with 'surfactants', i.e. soap. The key to the discovery was not a kitchen towel, but a bacterium that counteracts the coffee ring effect at the microscopic level. The findings were published in a recent edition of the leading journal Nature Communications.

When a coffee ring dries, its edges become noticeably darker and thicker. This occurs because the coffee particles move toward the edge of the stain while the water in the liquid evaporates. At a microscopic level, this coffee ring effect can also be seen in liquids with particles of other materials such as plastic and wood.

In various industrial applications ? applying an even coat of paint or varnish, for example ? the coffee ring effect can be particularly troublesome and scientists have long been seeking ways to counteract it. Raf De Dier and Wouter Sempels (Departments of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry) have now described a solution based on examples found in nature. De Dier and Sempels carried out experiments and calculations on nanomaterials as well as on a particularly promising bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a dangerous bacterium that can cause infections in open wounds. "A Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria colony wants to find as large a breeding ground as possible. To avoid overconcentration on the edges of a wound when spreading itself during the drying-out process, the bacterium produces substances that counteract the coffee ring effect."

These surface-tension-disrupting substances are called surfactants. Detergents such as soap are also surfactants. "Add soap to a stain ? a coffee stain or any other stain ?and you will still get a coffee ring effect. But at the same time the soap causes a counterflow from the edge back towards the centre of the stain in such a way that the small particles ? material or bacteria ? end up in a kind of whirlwind. In this way, you get a more uniform distribution of particles as evaporation occurs."

"If we genetically modify the bacteria so they can no longer produce surfactants, the coffee ring effect remains fully intact. Our findings on Pseudomonas aeruginosa also apply to other bacteria. For the biomedical sector, this study contributes primarily to our understanding of a biological system." But surfactants could also potentially be added to nanomaterials, and that makes De Dier and Sempels' findings interesting for industry. "Surfactants are inexpensive. It won't be long before we start seeing them turn up in industrial applications."

Warplanes, troops in NE Nigeria; mobile phones cut

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? Mobile phone service was cut off Thursday in areas of northeast Nigeria as jet fighters streaked through the sky and more soldiers were deployed to fight Islamic extremists waging a brutal insurgency.

Witnesses saw low-flying Nigerian jet fighters over Yola, the capital of Adamawa state, which President Goodluck Jonathan placed under emergency rule on Tuesday along with Borno and Yobe states. However, soldiers have met "no resistance" yet from extremists who have taken over villages and small towns in this region approaching the Sahara Desert, a military spokesman said.

An Associated Press journalist in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, found cell-phone services unavailable since early Thursday morning on all of the country's major mobile phone carriers. Mobile phone numbers belonging to government officials and military officials there and in neighboring Yobe state could not be reached.

Mobile phones have become the only real communication device in Nigeria for both voice calls and the Internet, as the state-run telephone company collapsed years ago. By cutting off service at towers, the military could stop extremists from receiving warnings or intelligence ahead of their operations. Authorities said they had no information about the service cutoff or refused to comment.

Nigeria's military and security forces have tracked fighters by their mobile phone signals in the past as well, prompting extremists from the radical Islamic network known as Boko Haram to attack mobile phone towers in the region.

Under the president's directive, soldiers have ultimate control over security matters in the three states, though his order allows civilian governments to remain in place. Over the last few days, witnesses and AP journalists have seen convoys of soldiers in trucks and buses moving through the region, as well as trucks carrying armored personnel carriers.

Nigeria's military has promised a "massive deployment of men and resources" but has declined to specify the numbers involved.

Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade, a military spokesman based in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, said more soldiers were en route to the region Thursday. Any assaults by ground forces also could be backed up by attack helicopters and jet fighter bombings, Olukolade said, though soldiers have yet to have a serious firefight with insurgents.

"The progress has been met with no resistance," Olukolade told The Associated Press.

This new military campaign comes on top of a previous massive deployment of soldiers and police to the region. That deployment failed to stop violence by Islamic extremists, who have killed more than 1,600 people since 2010, according to an AP count.

Nigeria's military has said Islamic fighters now use anti-aircraft guns mounted on trucks to fight the nation's soldiers, raising the possibility that the country's already overstretched security forces are becoming outgunned. With some soldiers sent to assist in the French-led anti-jihadist operation in Mali, and others serving elsewhere in Nigeria dealing with other security challenges, the 76,000-man force is creaking under the pressure, said former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell.

"While the Islamist insurgents do not offer a viable political alternative and remain divided among themselves, the threat they pose to Nigeria's political and economic future are significant, as Jonathan's state of emergency recognizes," Campbell wrote in an analysis published Wednesday by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Soldiers will now try to control an arid region of some 155,000 square kilometers (60,000 square miles), with powers to arrest anyone and take over any building.

That also has led to worries about the military abusing and potentially killing civilians, which has happened repeatedly in the past and during the country's current struggle with the Islamic insurgents. Asked about what soldiers would do to prevent the death of civilians, Olukolade said the troops had been "fully briefed" on the rules of engagement, without offering any other details.

In Adamawa state on Thursday, the military announced a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew across the entire state. Life otherwise was calm, though heavily armed soldiers had taken over for police officers on the streets of the state capital, searching vehicles and questioning drivers.

But mobile phones remained without service for some in the region as Thursday night fell. Olukolade said that extremists might have sabotaged the lines. When asked whether the military or government could have ordered the lines to be turned off, the general said he "wasn't aware of that."

Reuben Mouka, a spokesman for the Nigerian Communications Commission, which oversees mobile phone carriers in Africa's most populous nation, said he did not know about the services being cut off.

Funmilayo Omogbenigun, a spokeswoman for Nigeria's dominant carrier, South Africa's MTN Group Ltd., would only say "no comment" when asked if the government told her company to turn off service in the area. And Emeka Oparah, a spokesman for Bharti Airtel Ltd.'s operation in Nigeria, said he had no immediate information about the service cut.
