Wandering deer makes splash in Colo. home's pool

(AP) ? A wandering deer found himself in hot water after stepping on a pool cover and making a big splash in the backyard of a Colorado home.

Homeowner Scott Smith says he found the buck in his ground-level pool Sunday morning trying to wrestle his way out of the pool cover. Smith says he had no idea when the deer wandered onto the patio in the backyard of his Colorado Springs home.

KOAA-TV reports that firefighters built a ramp to help the animal out. Photos show the buck was coaxed out of the pool with rope to guide his way up the ramp.

The deer ran off as soon as he got out of the water, some four hours after he was discovered in the pool.

Plain packaging reduces the appeal of smoking

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

While Australia has recently passed legislation to ban logos from cigarette packages and to make plain packaging mandatory, other countries are still considering whether or not to take similar measures. New research published in Biomed Central's open access journal BMC Public Health provides a report on the appeal of plain cigarette packs, compared to branded packs, among women in Brazil, and finds that plain packs reduce the appeal of their contents.

Tobacco use is responsible for 5.4 million deaths every year across the world and is a leading cause of preventable death. Like many other countries, Brazil has prohibited most forms of tobacco advertising, but has not addressed the issue of marketing by tobacco companies via the cigarette pack itself.

Research suggests that many brands appear to specifically target young women by use of 'feminine' colored packs, fruit flavorings, or by suggestive terms such as 'slim' or 'superslim'. Scientists from Canada, the US, and Brazil collaborated on this online study of 640 young Brazilian women to see if these cigarettes had the same appeal when presented in plain packaging (but still with the brand name and description on them). As a final test, the women were able to choose which they would have preferred as a free gift, one of the plain or branded packs (although there was never any intension for the packs to be sent out).

Dr David Hammond from the University of Waterloo, Canada, who led this study explained, "The women in this study rated branded packs as more appealing, more stylish and sophisticated than the plain packs. They also thought that cigarettes in branded packs would be better tasting and smoother. Removal of all description from the packs, leaving only the brand, further reduced their appeal. In the pack offer test, participants were three times more likely to choose the branded pack as a free gift."

The results from this study, the first to look at the effect of plain cigarette packaging on smoking in Latin America, backs up research in other countries, which has found that plain packaging makes cigarettes less appealing to young people.

Christine White from the University of Waterloo, Canada, concluded, "Our results suggest that plain packaging and the removal of brand descriptors are likely to reduce the appeal of smoking for youth and young adults. Overall, these findings support the recommendations for plain packaging in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to order a military strike against Iranian nuclear sites, according to reports.

The newspaper Haaretz reported today that an Israeli official on condition of anonymity, said Merkel had called Netanyahu 10 days ago amid a wave of reports of an imminent Israeli attack, to give a "clear message as to her opposition" to such action.

Merkel urged Netanyahu to "give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work," and warned of the consequences of such an attack for security in the Middle East.

A spokesman for Netanyahu refused to comment on the report or to confirm the conversation had taken place.

Israel and its main ally the United States accuse Iran of seeking to develop an atomic arsenal, but Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.

Netanyahu told a visiting US congressman last Friday that Iran was speeding up its quest for nuclear weapons in defiance of international sanctions.

The Haaretz article described the phone call as "exceptional" given the "almost complete disconnect" for two months between Merkel and Netanyahu after a sharp disagreement over Israeli settlements and the Palestinian issue.

Deputy government spokesman Georg Streiter told a Berlin news conference he could "not confirm (the information in) this article," reminding that Berlin did not believe in a military solution to the Iran nuclear issue.

Merkel also said an Israeli attack would have severe consequences for the European Union and that international sanctions, which were taking their toll on Iran, should be strengthened and given time to work, Haaretz wrote.

Iran has doubled its capacity to produce enriched uranium at its underground Fordo plant, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report released late yesterday.

The IAEA also accuses Iran of frustrating UN inspection of its Parchin plant, where it suspects tests of explosives that could be used in a nuclear warhead were carried out, by scrubbing it clean.

Netanyahu said yesterday he would present to the UN the "truth about the terror regime of Iran" at his General Assembly address in late September.

Connect What? | The State of Security

In the next few weeks and months we?re going to talk a lot about ?connecting? stuff.

We?re going to use the phrase ?Connecting security to the business? with almost annoying ?frequency. Not to be annoying, but because it?s important. ?Because it can change the way the business views security, and the way security views the business.

This begs a primer of sorts: What do we mean by all this ?connecting security to the business? talk?

What Dis-Connected Security Looks Like:

  • ?We bought some of that next-gen firewall stuff ? it doesn?t impact users and it?s fun to play with.?
  • ?I treat every business unit the same. I use the peanut butter approach?to cover everything.?
  • ?The business keeps making decisions that impact security and force me to play catch-up.?
  • ?I told them their servers failed CIS benchmark 1.9.6 for anonymous SID/name translations. They ?looked at me like I was speaking Greek.?
  • ?I avoid?conversations?outside of the IT security or risk groups.?

The other side of the coin demonstrates what ?connected security? is all about. It?s less?technical?than it is relational. It?s more about the business than it is about the technology or the threat-du-jour.

What Connected Security Looks Like:

  • ?I know what the businesses? Top 3 initiatives are for the year?and so does my team.?
  • ?And we?re developing a plan to support them.?
  • ?I like it that business units come to us and ask risk questions because they know we won?t peddle FUD.?
  • ?The business trusts us to provide an objective measure of?security?posture.?
  • ?We?re seen as business enablers.?
  • ?I like taking conversations about IT security to sales, finance and fulfillment.?

That?s probably enough primer for now. The story will get clearer as we unravel more of it.

Happy Labor Day, everyone!
