The importance of Avoiding Gout Food In Managing Gout | New ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

One of the main triggers of gout is diet. Even though gout can be because of factors other than diet, some foods and drinks ? ones high in purines are known to be contributing factors behind gout attacks. To prevent future flare ups and to handle your condition it is important that you know what are the gout foods to avoid?

As a rule of thumb, foods which are high in purines are these that are most likely to cause a spike within the levels of urates inside your bloodstream and thus trigger an assault. Purines are chemicals which are found naturally in the body as well as in certain foodstuffs. Once the purines are broken down within the digestive program they are converted into uric acid and urate.

Among the list of foods high in purines there are a few which are well known to be ?risk? foods. These include products such as offal and organ meat ? liver, kidneys and heart. There?s also some that are at odds with current research into a healthy diet. These consist of most seafood, oily fish such as sardines, mussels and shellfish. Whilst they are promoted as beneficial to cardiac well being, they?re all on the list of offenders when it comes to gout. You might have heard rumors about how red wine is also bad for gout, think again prior to you break open the celebratory bottle of beer. Red wine is actually relatively moderate in purine levels and conversely beer is extremely high and likely to promote an attack of gout. Remarkably carbonated soft drinks with artificial sweeteners fare no better ? they have an above average pH level and therefore are to be avoided or at least consumed in moderation.

As an aside it may be noted that lots of processed meals and those containing artificial sweeteners are on the cusp of becoming risk foods when it comes to gout including most sweets, jellies, white pasta and meals with high levels of processed white flour. Where possible, if you are prone to attacks of gout then in reality it is best to try steer clear of these meals totally or take a calculated gamble and have them in very moderate portions. So the query is what can you consume and steer clear of gout and what are the gout meals to avoid?

Once more the word is moderation in all types of food but when you eat some of the subsequent in reasonable quantities you should be okay. From the meat counter, veal, pork, turkey, are all middling in purines ? you don?t need to steer clear of them totally but some restraint should be exercised when consuming them. In the event you like fish ? anchovies, trout, salmon, scallops and haddock are similarly high but relatively safe in MODERATION. Most fresh fruits, veggies are great for you, and actually some meals such as cherries have a positive effect on purine levels.I think the obvious factor will be the total avoidance of meals which have been overly processed ? the processes and additives in the processed foods appearing to have a negative impact on the purine and/or pH levels of the foodstuffs.

If you want more information on low purine diet for gout, don?t read just rehashed articles online to avoid getting ripped off. Go here: low purine diet foods.

"None of those repercussions would be automatically compelling to ... a mayor forced to choose between thousands of jobs and a Flemish masterpiece."

I've been meaning to mention this column from a couple of weeks ago raising the possibility of some art being sold to help stave off Detroit's bankruptcy (though it's quick to point out that "the city has no plans to sell art").? The interesting angle here is the city owns the works directly; they don't actually belong to the DIA.

That means two things.? First, there's no issue of donor intent:? "Many of the museum's greatest works were purchased directly by the city during the 1920s, when the city ran the museum as a department, paying staff salaries and budgeting for acquisitions. The city used its own dollars, not those of wealthy patrons who might have specified conditions for sale."

And second, the chief argument against selling in cases of this sort -- that the work is actually held "in trust" for the relevant public -- would seem to have little force here.? As a local museum historian says, "it takes the whole notion of public trust and makes it complicated and interesting."? In this case, the work seems not to be held "in trust" for the public; it's held by the public.? If they -- the public -- decide to sell to avoid bankruptcy, what's the argument against it?? "You, the public, cannot sell this work because it belongs to ... the public"?

Failing that, the Deaccession Police can always fall back on their favorite argument:? If you sell, we will sanction you.? Therefore, in order not to be sanctioned, you should not sell.? Can't beat that logic.

Benson Henderson takes UFC lightweight title in classic decision

Benson Henderson won the UFC's lightweight belt by winning a decision 49-46, 48-47, 49-46 over Frankie Edgar at Saitama Super Arena in Japan on Saturday. His cardio and strength were too much for the smaller Edgar.

The two lightweights came out with great movement and crazy strikes in the first round, just as you would expect from two smaller guys. Edgar stalked Henderson down, but Henderson did not back away from the fight. He threw several kicks, and Edgar caught them.

In the second round, Edgar continued to move around the cage and cut angles, meeting Henderson with leg kicks. Again, Edgar caught Henderson's kicks, but Henderson adapted in this round and threw a jab, even with his leg in Edgar's hands. Henderson cut Edgar's left eye with his jab, and it swelled as the fight went on. Late in the second, Edgar got a takedown, and when he moved off Henderson, "Smooth" landed a perfect upkick. Edgar fell to the ground. He survived, but Henderson did serious damage to Edgar's nose.

[ Related: Kevin Iole's UFC 144 breakdown ]

When the third round began, Edgar's nose was swollen and pouring blood. Henderson pounced when Edgar slipped on a kick, and he took Edgar to the ground. Henderson tried to take Edgar's back, but couldn't because of how Edgar moved away. Late in the round, Edgar got a takedown.

Henderson started the fourth round with few marks on his face, while Edgar's was busted up and swollen. Halfway through the round, Edgar went for a takedown. Henderson pulled guard and caught Edgar in a guillotine. Though it was deep, Edgar was able to pop his head out.

Before the fifth and final round, Henderson's corner asked, "Do you got five good minutes?" Henderson answered, "I've got 15."

[ Related: Weight flop proves costly as 'Rampage' loses to Ryan Bader ]

Henderson showed that freshness as he landed several shots and shook off the ones Edgar threw. Edgar continued to try for a takedown, but Henderson shook him off. He moved around the cage as if it was the first minute of the bout, not the 25th.

After the bout, Henderson thanked a former opponent for the upkick that changed the course of the fight.

"I gotta thank [fellow UFC lightweight] Cowboy Cerrone for that because he landed it on me, and that hurt bad."

Henderson previously held a title belt in the WEC, and now he has UFC gold secure around his waist. His well-rounded game was too much for Edgar. The fact that Henderson could have gone another three rounds spoke volumes to the judges.

Justin Bieber, Far East Movement Drop Fist-Pumping 'Live My Life'

The RedOne-produced party anthem is the lead single off FEM's Dirty Bass.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber's track with Far East Movement dropped Friday (February 24), a few days earlier than expected. "Live My Life," which officially hits iTunes on Tuesday, is the lead single off FEM's new album, Dirty Bass. It feels like Bieber is taking a page from the Usher playbook by hooking up with the dance party-minded production team. The club thumper pays homage to tracks that Usher has made with David Guetta and will.i.am, for instance.

The feel-good song is grinding and a little dirty. For Bieber's part, he sings the hook, proclaiming, "I'm gonna live my life/ No matter what/ We party tonight/ I'm gonna live, live, live my life/ I know that we gonna be all right." He then throws in the good-old dance floor chant "woo woo woo" for good measure.

"We're thrilled to have Justin be a part of Dirty Bass," rapper Kev Nish told RollingStone.com about the club-busting collaboration. "Far East Movement has always focused on unexpected collaborations and mashing up musical genres, which keeps making music exciting. 'Live My Life' is a song we think both Far East Movement and Bieber fans will enjoy together."

The team also worked with LMFAO's RedFoo on a remix of the swirling party track. And, in case you're wondering how the guys in FEM know Bieber, well, apparently Snoop Dogg introduced them at an awards show last year.

The track's producer, RedOne, described the song as "a smash," before he spoke a bit more about the song and hitting the studio with the boys. He added, "And Justin sang the chorus. It's a really good song, and I think people are gonna dance like crazy to it."

What do you think of "Live My Life"? Leave your comment below!

Public still opposes auto bailout, poll finds

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

While the U.S. auto industry may be ?back,? as President Barack Obama recently declared during his State-of-the-Union address, that hasn?t changed the fact that a majority of Americans remain opposed to the 2008 ? 2009 bailout of Detroit.

A new Gallup poll finds 51 percent of those surveyed still disapprove of the $85 billion rescue effort, with only 44 percent?saying they approve.? And the figure is even more lopsided when party affiliation is consideredD.? The poll, conducted for the public radio program Marketplace, found 73 percent?of Republicans opposed ? though 63?percent?of Democrats were supportive of the bailout.

Americans keeping cars longer than ever

Though the results are still in negative territory, overall, that?s still a significant improvement from 2009, when various polls?showed that the vast majority of Americans, regardless of political persuasion, were unhappy with the use of taxpayer money to save General Motors and Chrysler.

The numbers have been slowly moving back into positive territory, various surveys have found, especially as the two once-bankrupt makers have started posting solid earnings again ? and have been adding thousands of new jobs.? On the other hand, reports that the U.S. Treasury could still lose perhaps $20 billion on the bailout ? especially if GM?s stock price doesn?t rebound ? continues to throw up a red flag.

Hertz asks for federal oversight for recalled cars

And the GOP presidential contenders all but trip over one another in debates and stump speeches, to turn the bailout into a liability for President Barack Obama.

During a Wednesday night Republican debate in Phoenix, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said, ?I think it was 2008, President Bush was still in office. And the three chief executive officers of the three major auto companies got in their private planes and flew to Washington, and said: please write us a check. I think they wanted $50 billion. And I wrote an op-ed in the paper and I said: absolutely not. Don?t write a check for $50 billion.?

Toyota turn to fleets to inflate sales

While the bailout is likely to remain a subject of contention for some time, the new Gallup poll isn?t entirely negative for the auto industry overall.

?There was a time when the auto industry and our positive/negative image ratings was down at minus 35; that was in 2009,? said Gallup editor-in-chief Frank Newport. ?In fact, it was second only to the oil and gas industry, which interestingly ? perennially ? pulled up the bottom on that.?

Now, he noted, the auto industry is back in positive territory, with a plus-10 rating.? That?s still well below the image of the computer industry but well ahead of oil and gas ? and the federal government, which now ranks dead last.

Do you approve of the auto bailout?

?

Barnes & Noble announces $199 Nook to take on Kindle Fire (Appolicious)

During the final quarter of 2011, Amazon?s newly released 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet managed to be No. 2 in tablet sales, just behind Apple?s juggernaut iPad. That hasn?t gone unnoticed in the Android tablet world, with Amazon competitor Barnes & Noble announcing today a comparable Nook Tablet to take on Amazon?s new champ.

The story comes from GigaOM, which reports that Barnes & Noble?s new Nook Tablet is pretty much identical to its old one, except for the price tag. The ammunition that Amazon?s tab has is its highly affordable price tag at just $199. So the new Nook Tablet will also come in at $199, down from $249. Barnes & Noble has also dropped the price of its Nook Color e-reader, from $199 to $169.

The big difference between the new Nook and the old one is its memory/storage capacity. the $199 Nook will include 8GB of hard drive space and 512MB of RAM, whereas the $249 model carries a 16GB hard drive and just over a gigabyte in RAM.

Grabbing an early lead

It makes sense that Barnes & Noble sees the Kindle Fire as a legitimate threat. During the holiday season in 2011, Amazon?s new tab and the Nook Tablet taken together accounted for some 21 percent of the tablets sold for the quarter, GigaOM reports. But the Kindle Fire made up more than two-thirds of that chunk of the market ? a pretty clear shot across the bow from Amazon, and a pretty good reason for Barnes & Noble to make a play to combat the Fire?s early supremacy.

But Barnes & Noble isn?t the only one potentially making moves in this particular segment of the Android tab market. Rumor has it, Amazon is planning to release another version of the Kindle Fire, this one more in line to take on the likes of the iPad and Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1. According to a story reported by Digital Trends, Amazon has placed an order with Taiwanese component manufacturer Foxconn to build a 10-inch version of the Fire that will be available this summer.

That rumor comes from Asian tech website DigiTimes, which is often at the center of such rumors but which is right about as often as it?s wrong. Still, should this rumor prove to be true, it would be a sign that Amazon is intending to try to make the success of the Kindle Fire work in another segment of the tablet market, making it more of a competitor to other Android tab makers such as Motorola and HTC.

Content is key

The Kindle Fire?s success has a lot to do with its price tag, surely, but Amazon?s strength comes from the big ecosystem of content it can lend to its tablet. It?s filled with quick, easy to download apps, e-books, videos and music. That?s part of what makes it so dangerous against Barnes & Noble and the Nook Tablet; if Amazon can lean on the strength of the content empire it has already built, presumably its tablet could be a contender at a larger size (and presumably higher price tag).

Meanwhile, even in the short time the Kindle Fire has been around, Amazon is establishing itself as a force in the Android tab market, and its competitors are taking notice. Even with its price drop, though, Barnes & Noble needs to be thinking about ways to fight back, because Amazon has quite a lot of ammunition in its online empire.

Taylor Swift and Zac Efron: Dueting, Not Dating

So much for Tac.

Following rumors that Taylor Swift and Zac Efron were Hollywood's new young power couple, this pair taped an appearance on Ellen yesterday (it airs today), during which they acted adorably together... but also shot down chatter that they were anything more than friends.

“We are not a couple," Taylor said, adding that Zac is "awesome" and then joking about how they are barely even co-stars because they both just voiced characters for The Lorax:

"You hear people get together when they’re shooting movies, co-stars. But not like animated co-stars. You know what I’m saying. 'Oh my god, as we were recording our voiceovers on separate coasts we really connected.'”

Watch Zac and Taylor talk about their Valentine's Day plans below, following by a snippet of their fun duet on the show:

>> reporter: that's right. there have been some word oefrs the last couple of days putting the pressure on israeli leaders. you had the chief of staff saying an attack would destabilize the area. sanctions and diplomatic pressure need be given an opportunity to work. he also said that a nuclear iran could spark an arms race in this part of the world, a very dangerous arms race . that goes a bit towards what's happening in tehran. they are there. they are hoping to meet with nuclear scientists. they are hoping to go to some nuclear facilities and set up future meetings and future schedule for themselves. how much of that is going to be done? there's a lot of skeptics on the progress. it is some diplomatic movement in iran .

>> thank you. stephanie gosk. joining me now is jim. you're your reaction.

>> what should we be watching for as the clock ticks for this big meeting on march 5?

The Best Healthcare Is Preventative Self-Care ? Fat Then Fit Now

In the past, and in the presidential primaries, there has been and continues to be, much talk and debate about national health care.? Those debates will be rekindled with the news reports that Obamacare is going to go before the Supreme Court. ?However, I am not going to discuss politics or the pros and cons of universal health care. ?For now, that is in the control of the courts and the politicians.

What I would like to discuss is one of the major risk factors to our health, one major risk that we, ourselves, can actually control ? obesity.

I heard on the news that obesity (I believe they stated specifically childhood obesity) was a complex problem, one that does not have simple solutions.

We control what goes in.

We control the amount of exercise we put out.

The problem is not complex: it is too much sugar, too much high fructose corn syrup, too much processed fast foods, not enough lean proteins, not enough fresh raw vegetables and not enough getting from behind the computer and moving.

The solution itself is also simple: cut the sugar, cut out the high fructose corn syrup, get rid of the highly processed refined garbage Americans are shoveling down their gullets and replace them with lean proteins, raw fresh vegetables, healthy fats, low glycemic fruits and get up and get moving.

Today we have more obese people in the United States than those who are simply overweight.

This is a real problem

This problem will lead to real diseases.

The morbidly obese are going to stress the U.S. health care system to a degree that not all the private or public health insurance money will be able to handle.

A local school district was given a grant from the State Education Department to fight childhood obesity. I don?t know why they needed $5,000. I will tell them how to do it for half that. Has anyone ever seen school menus today? While healthy options are available, there is still plenty of sugar laden and processed junk on the menu. Side note: if your school still has soda machines, get ?em out.

Physical education must be a five-day-a-week class and a regimented exercise program is a necessity. We need to teach children fitness as a lifestyle from their earliest and most formative years. I will even come in and design it.

My good friend, the Yonk, at his highly influential blog The Lu Lac Political Letter, mentioned how a company had an incentive program for its employees. The employees were paid for taking steps to be responsible for their own wellness. Sounds like a good plan, but what passes for dietary guidelines and exercise plans really do very little for the morbidly obese. Again, I can design the program and then I will make sure people stick to it. If you want to pay people to take care of themselves okay, but give them the guidance and the accountability to stick to it.

I remember in the mid 1980?s when HMOs and PPOs first started, one of the great parts about my plan was that my gym membership was paid in full by the health insurance company. I used that membership. However, I knew many who joined, but then were out of the gym within a month. The result was that the good intentions of helping their insured get fit, ended up just costing the insurance company more money than it saved and they changed the benefit to a discount and then eventually did away with it.

In the United States, we are focused on our healthcare crisis. We are trying to figure out how to pay for care. The reality is that we must stop focusing solely on the ?care? part of health care and start putting an emphasis on ?health.?

Unless we act today, for some, tomorrow may be very bleak.

Green Recovery: A Step Back, and a Step Down

First things first: what?s up NYC!?!

After a six hour Megabus ride last night, I have finally made it home to the streets of the Upper West Side. Holla! This weekend couldn?t have come at a better time?it was an emotionally and mentally draining week at school, and in spite of the 10 metric tons of textbook I?m carrying around with me, I look forward to at least one Saturday of fun.

Today?s Green Recovery story is about a recovery in progress. When I began this series, I was intent on featuring recovery stories written by people whose recoveries were firmly in the past. The series has evolved, though, to include testimonials from people who are in all stages of recovery: the near past, the distant past, and everything in between. ?Recovery? itself is a fluid term, and the process rarely has a distinct ?beginning? or ?end;? it?s a process of gradual evolution. So I think it?s only right that the GR series should encompass a spectrum of voices, some of which describe recovery as something that happened a long time ago, and some of which talk about it in the present tense.

Today?s story is from a young woman who has been through a harrowing ED and recovery journey in the last few years. Her disorder led to an urgent health crisis, described below, and you?ll be able to see the physical scars she sustained in addition to the emotional ones. She has recently moved from her lifelong home of New Jersey to attend grad school, so she and I can commiserate on the strangeness of leaving a familiar zone for a new one. She has asked to remain anonymous, but she also asked me to throw in these little details so that she wouldn?t sound like a ?ghost woman? to everyone. After reading her brave and honest narrative, I doubt that any of us will feel that she is ghostly. I? hope that we?ll all feel a lot closer to her, and be able to offer her some supportive feedback on her journey.

___________________________________________________________

I was that kid everyone knew ? chunky as a child, chubby as a teen, and a bit overweight as a young adult. I remember standing in front of mirrors, even in the seventh grade, and wishing there was some way I could lose weight (without giving up my snickers bars, cheeseburgers, and the gallon of milk I would drink bi-weekly, of course).

But by my second semester of college I was a vegetarian ? mainly because the school?s food was atrocious. In the years that followed I took a number of environment classes which informed my decision to no longer consume meat. Through the process I lost maybe 10 lbs ? noticeable, but not significant in my eyes.

A few Decembers ago, I read Joel Fuhrman?s Eat to Live. My father ? who was recovering from quadruple by-pass surgery ? recommended it to me, and I tore through it in an evening. I was already vegetarian, so a lot of his suggestions seemed easy for me to implement. I began the New Year fully absorbed in his message ? perhaps too absorbed. I began restricting, heavily. The only grains I allowed myself were a small bowl of oatmeal every morning. I cut out all fats, steaming my vegetables or eating them entirely raw. And my portions were ridiculously small. Most nights I remember going to bed with my stomach churning ? but somehow I found that comforting, like the sound of progress.

By the beginning of February I had lost a good 20lbs. My restricting was accompanied by excess exercising. The gym was located a little over a mile from my apartment, and I would walk there every evening to spend a half hour on the elliptical and a half hour running on a treadmill. Most days I was burning more calories than I was consuming. Around the same time I began noticing that, after eating, my shoulder hurt and my stomach ached. The pain would wear off, but then it would be time to eat again. This only further complicated my already confused relationship with food.

My college was located approximately an hour and a half from my parent?s house, so some weekends I would drive back to volunteer with a local organization I had spent time with in the past. One weekend I spent a grueling, thirteen hour day as a server at an event, running up and down stairs and back and forth between buildings. For the first time in two months I had a huge meal around noon, knowing my shift wouldn?t end until late that evening. The typical pain arrived after eating, but this time it didn?t go away. By five o?clock I could barely stand and it took me a good hour to just walk across the street. I sat down and didn?t move until someone found me sitting in my boss?s office, dazed. I called my parents to pick me up and they took me to the emergency room.

To make a long story short, the doctors didn?t know what was wrong. My abdominal cavity was filling with air, but all the tests they ran showed nothing. In the early hours of the morning they performed emergency exploratory surgery and discovered a gaping hole in my stomach. I spent the next week in the hospital, sustained purely by IV. The following week, on bed rest, I could only eat tiny amounts of pureed food. I was in my early 20s and had to completely and utterly re-teach myself to eat. I didn?t tell anyone, but a part of me knew this had been caused by restricting and exercising. Over the course of those two weeks I lost an additional 25lbs. I was ?officially? underweight.

Over the summer I continued restricting and exercising every evening after work (8-10 hours of standing in a factory). I was convinced I was healthy again, that I was eating normally (because a small side salad as a lunch is a huge amount after not eating for weeks). I slowly began gravitating towards a vegan diet, partially because I figured cutting out dairy would help me maintain my new, skinny figure, and partially because I am, genuinely, horrified at the complete and utter disrespect we show towards animals.

But there were still complications. I hadn?t had a period ? still haven?t, in fact ? since before my surgery. And this year-anniversary has driven home the notion that, yes, perhaps I did have an eating disorder, and perhaps am still living with one. This was a thought people had suggested to me in the past, but I continuously and repeatedly repudiated.

My new year has been motivated by two thoughts. First, that my goal is to be healthy. Not skinny. Second, my adoption of a vegan lifestyle was hypocritical. How could I truly claim to live compassionately, to advocate for the rights and humane treatment of every living creature, when I wasn?t treating myself with compassion?

I?ve taken a step back, and a step down. I?m treating myself the way I wish all others could be treated. I?m eating enough. I no longer go to bed with a rumbling stomach, and wake up unable to complete a simple Sun Salutation due to hunger pains. I?ve cut back my three-mile runs to half hour walks every day. I can think clearer and I have more energy. I?ve acknowledged (and am slowly accepting) the need to heal myself (body and mind) so I can again enjoy my runs (rather than being a slave to them).

Of course, this means I have days where I feel my muscles are ?atrophying,? the fat is ?caking on,? and I?m going to see that chubby little kid facing me in the mirror again. There are days when my stomach doesn?t churn at all, and I have the compulsion to go for a long run because, obviously, I?ve eaten too much.

So far, this year, I?ve been able to swallow that back by focusing on what truly matters. Not being skinny. Not losing weight or fitting a sexy ideal. But being healthy and compassionate, not only to myself, but to every person and animal I encounter.

___________________________________________________________

Many things stand out about this story. First, the universality of its origin: the girl who was slightly ?chubby? as a child is often the same girl who tries to fight her body with ED behaviors later on. I often find myself telling people that many of the people who become ED-prone were slightly overweight in their emotionally vulnerable childhood years, and flirted with restrictive behavior as in an attempt to ward off feelings of having been ?chubby,? ?big,? or ?awkward.?

I was also interested in the author?s mention of Eat to Live. Marissa, who recently wrote a Green Recovery story, credits that book with her recovery. This all goes to show that any resource?book, website, etc.?can be a harmful influence to some, and a positive influence to others. I? think Eat to Live is a very inspiring and helpful book for people who suffer from high cholesterol or who are trying to lose weight through plant-based food, and of course I love its emphasis on nutrient-dense food as a means of fighting disease. But I personally find it to be unnecessarily restrictive on many fronts (fat, grains, portions, sodium), at least for people who are not directly at risk for chronic disease, and would probably have found it triggering if I had read it early in my own recovery.

The bottom line is that what may be life-saving to some people (in this case, someone battling high cholesterol or weight) may also not be appropriate for someone else (a girl who is at a healthy weight, and prone to restriction). Part of maintaining recovery is to know what kinds of voices and advice are constructive for you to hear, and which aren?t. There?s a lot of ?noise? that I consciously tune out?diets that strike me as needlessly restrictive and/or driven by the tendency to vilify food, conversations about weight loss/detox. There are even small things that I tune out: some time ago, I mentioned that I find it uncomfortable to enjoy a big meal with other women who immediately begin to talk about how they?ll need to ?burn it off? or compensate tomorrow.

It?s not that I think that everyone is in the wrong for having these dialogs; it?s simply that I don?t find them constructive, and they also evoke tendencies in my own past that I have moved past. So, I tune some of these conversations out, and simply remain focused on my own health priorities: eating a diet that is as healthy as it is ample and satisfying; being mindful of good nutrition without becoming fanatical or extreme.

What do you think of our guest?s Green Recovery? If you?re a recovered/recovering person, what influences do you find helpful, and which have you learned to tune out?

Today?s agenda:

  • yoga
  • lunch/hang time with my friend Cassie
  • coffee/conversation downtown with my friend Sam
  • a little schoolwork
  • evening out with my friend Nelly

And who knows what else? Nothing quite like having NY at your fingertips.

Parenting | How To Be a Good Step-Dad :: By Maureen HamiltonM ...

These days, blended families are the rule and not the exception; many children are growing up in homes that feature some conglomeration of step-parents, half-siblings, full siblings, step-siblings, and biological parents. Yet despite the widespread social acceptance of blended families, the fact remains that there is often tension between step-parents and step-children; no matter how politically correct we try to be, step-parents and biological parents are not interchangeable?and they shouldn?t be. The relationship between a step-parent and a step-child is a whole different parenting ball game. This fact doesn?t undermine the value of the step-parent, it just acknowledges the diversity of family relationships and helps us recognize the need to work with the challenges that come with blended families in order to achieve a greater sense of love and security and avoid major relational problems.

There are many blended family dynamics that we could address, but let?s focus on one specific role in the blended family: the step-dad. Step-dads often struggle to understand where their step-children are coming from emotionally, and are often unsure of how to proceed in a leadership role among children who aren?t biologically his?especially if it s during their teenage years. If you are a step-dad, here are a few tips to help you navigate the rocky emotional that comes with taking on a child-rearing role in a blended family:

? Accept your step-children?s emotional wounds: Take the time to see where your step-children are coming from emotionally, and do not take it personally that they may harbour resentments towards you about the loss of their father. Children have a right to be hurt and grieve the fact that their biological family is no longer together, and you have to respect this right to grief as a step-parent.
? Display calm, consistent behaviour: The best thing you can do to win your step-children?s trust is be calm and dependable. Treat them consistently with kindness, respect, and authentic concern. Don?t be too bushy and don?t disrespect their boundaries.
? Don?t try to replace dad: A step-dad is not a replacement dad, especially if step-children still have a good relationship with their biological father. Your job as a step-dad is not to pretend that you are the new dad, but to offer your step-children love and warmth as a positive male role model.
? Be firm: While it is important not to push your step-children too hard, it is also important that they know you are still an authority figure in the home and that you require respect. Be firm and consistent in enforcing the rules of the house?if you are too much of a push over your children will resent you just as much as if you were to be totalitarian.

Step-parenting is tricky, and taking on the role of step-dad can be emotionally challenging, but it is also rewarding: blended families give their members opportunities to explore new avenues of personal growth and help them develop their capacity to love others outside of the traditional biological unit.

SmugMug (Winter 2012)

If you're looking for a customizable gallery site for your digital photos, or want to try to sell images online, SmugMug is a very capable option. But SmugMug's interface looks outdated compared with Flickr's seamless one, and its community is dwarfed by Flickr's, which has abundant ways of exploring the work of and connecting with other photographers of every interest type. What's more, Flickr and most other competitors offer a free account option, while SmugMug has a minimum $40-per-year membership fee.

Signup and Setup
Though SmugMug offers no free account like Flickr, Picasa, PhotoBucket, and others do, there is a free 15-day trial, and thankfully, this doesn't require credit card info. You can sign up either by entering and email address or through Facebook Connect. Right when you first sign up, you get a personalized URL at the smugmug.com domain. Next, you name your gallery, choose a category for it (over 60 choices, from Airplanes to Zoos, with Births and Funerals in between.) Or you can create a category name of your own. The gallery gets its own URL, using a slash after your main one.

Your homepage in SmugMug by default shows your user picture and any biographical info you've supplied, followed by thumbnails for your galleries. You can add horizontal entries for slideshows, individual large photo views, communities, a keyword tag cloud, or most popular or recent photo. You can easily move any of these sections up and down on your homepage. It's more configurable that Flickr or Picasa's, but one basic behavior I prefer in those two competitors is that the basic site URL takes you to your own gallery dashboard page; in SmugMug, this takes you to SmugMug's advertisement page.

Uploading
SmugMug offers drag-and-drop uploading on its site if you're using an HTML5-compliant browser, where Flickr requires installing a desktop uploader app for that. Both also let you upload via an email address. If you use standard software like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Apple Aperture, though, none of this matters, since both services have included publish exporters. SmugMug does offer a good deal of third-party integration, but most apps, like the popular iPhone image editors are more likely to have built-in uploading to Facebook and Flickr than to SmugMug, and Flickr's flourishing App Garden makes SmugMug's look tiny.

Video
One area SmugMug beats Flickr is in video hosting: You can upload videos of up to 20 minutes, compared with Flickr's 90 seconds. Then again, if you're going to do that, why not use the free YouTube or Vimeo sites? Flickr's HD video quality is among the highest I've seen, so the shorter limit makes sense. Flickr's video capability is more for "long photographs" than for video. The SmugMug video player offers "Stretch" and "HD" options. SmugMug reported being done with the uploads very quickly, but when I tried to view the images online, a "Processing" icon displayed in place of the image thumbnail.

High definition video looked great in both services. Both also let me download the video, but in SmugMug it came back with a 3,279 Kbps bitrate, wheras Flickr sent a much higher-quality 24 Mbps bitrate file. Audio was similarly compressed, even though I'd chosen "Hidef" from the SmugMug download menu.

Organizing
After you upload images to a SmugMug gallery, you're simply taken to the gallery. Flickr, by contrast, offers the chance to add titles, captions, and tags right after uploading. You can add these from links at the bottom of an image view in SmugMug. An even bigger missing tagging component is SmugMug's lack of face tagging, for which both Picasa and Flickr offer strong implementations.

SmugMug does offer a Map This button, which does a nice job of showing where your image was taken on a Google Map if the location data was included?as is the case for most smart phones. But again, competitors offer deeper map integration, showing a map thumbnail alongside the photo on its page, and Flickr even shows a world map where you can browser your own or all members' photos. For the ultimate in photo mapping, though, check out Panoramio.

Galleries
SmugMug's galleries of your uploaded photos and videos show the thumbnails of all gallery content on the left, with a larger image taking up the right sides of the browser window. Under the photo are Tweet, Facebook Share, and Facebook Like buttons. When you hover the mouse cursor over the image a flyover panel slides from the right side, offering Thumbs Up and Down, other viewing sizes, EXIF information, and a folder icon for downloading.

You can change a gallery's appearance by choosing among SmugMug's 70-odd themes at any time. But this seems more of? MySpace style approach, while Flickr and Picasa offer a more Facebook-like approach?choose one consistent, well designed interface for everyone's photo galleries.

Clicking on a picture opens a larger version that takes up most of the window, but unlike Flickr's equivalent view, SmugMug still displays the distracting menu bar across the top, with size choices, purchase options, and social buttons. I did like how SmugMug's Slideshow button switches the browser to full screen mode automatically.

Steampunk Travel

I'll come right out with my question.

In a world in which the most technological advanced mode of transportation is a train powered by a steam engine, how can I offer a mode of transportation to the individual person (something along the lines of a motor bike) that has the potential to go off-road. When I say off-road I do not mean able to go through hills and rocks but just something that would not require a perfectly paved road to maneuver around moderately well. It could even be around the size of one of those 'rocket-bikes' that I see (naturally not one of those undersized ones that look absolutely ridiculous and are probably too small even for a 3 year old).

The primary use of these vehicles by people would be to transverse through large cities (there is no type of automobiles being driven through the streets). I am not looking for something that is powered by gas but sort of keeps with the heart of Steampunk (though the overall concept of my story is not actually Steampunk).

Electric cigarette explodes in Fla man's mouth (AP)

PENSACOLA, Fla. ? A Florida man trying to kick the smoking habit was puffing on an electronic cigarette when a faulty battery caused it to explode in his mouth, taking out some of his front teeth and a chunk of his tongue and severely burning his face, fire officials said Wednesday.

"The best analogy is like it was trying to hold a bottle rocket in your mouth when it went off," said Joseph Parker, division chief for the North Bay Fire Department. "The battery flew out of the tube and set the closet on fire."

Fire Chief Joseph Miller said the victim contacted the department on Wednesday to thank firefighters and told them he was recovering at a hospital in Mobile, Ala., and anticipated being released later in the day. Officials have not publicly identified him, citing department policy. But a Facebook page under the name of 57-year-old Tom Holloway of Niceville was filled with well-wishers commenting on the injury and database searches matched his address on the fire report with his name.

Holloway was in his office at home when the device exploded, leaving behind burned carpet, chair cushions, pictures and office equipment. A scorched battery case found on a piece of melted carpet appears to be one for a cigar-sized device, the report said. Those in the house with him rushed to his aid in the smoke-filled room and tried to put the fire out with salt, the report said.

Holloway and his family members didn't immediately answer The Associated Press' requests for interviews.

Investigators do not know the brand of cigarette, type of battery or age of the device, Parker said. It appears the battery was rechargeable lithium because a recharging station and other batteries were in the room, he said. Parker has forwarded information about the blaze to the fire marshal's office to include in any databases on the devices. But Parker said he has yet to hear of any similar instances.

Holloway agreed to let firefighters take the burned case and other, undamaged ones with them as examples for reporting to a national database, according to the report. But Holloway has asked for the burned case back. Parker said it could be used as evidence in any litigation, although Holloway did not indicate why he wanted it returned, Parker said.

Thomas Kiklas, co-founder of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, said the industry knows of no problems with the cigarettes or batteries exploding.

Kicklas said the rigid, plastic cigarettes include a small battery and cartridge. The battery is designed to generate an electric charge when the device is inhaled. The charge sets off vapor in the cigarette tube. The nicotine-filled mist gives the taste and experience of smoking without the smoke.

Kiklas cited a federal report that found 2.5 million Americans used electronic cigarettes last year.

"There have been billions and billions of puffs on the cigarettes and we have not heard of this happening before," he said.

Fire officials said the victim told them that he was trying to stop smoking, which is why he was puffing on the electronic version. However, the industry does not claim electronic cigarettes allow smokers to kick the habit, just that they are a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes because they have fewer chemicals, Kiklas said.

The Food and Drug Administration posted a warning about the cigarettes on its website in October saying that e-cigarettes were addictive, could contain dangerous chemicals like nicotine and might encourage kids to try other tobacco products.

In 2010, the agency sent letters to some e-cigarette makers for violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act including "violations of good manufacturing practices, making unsubstantiated drug claims and using the devices as delivery mechanisms for active pharmaceutical ingredients," according to the FDA website.

Holloway is a photographer, motorcycle enthusiast and Vietnam-era veteran, according to his Facebook page.
