Tips for Overcoming Failure and Defeat, a ... - Personal Growth

How to Handle Failure - Tips for Overcoming Failure

"Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. You don't fail overnight. Instead, failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated every day." - Jim Rohn

Reflect on Failure

If you want to know why you failed at something, take time to reflect and analyze. Find out what you did or didn't do. Figure out if you need to change your strategy, attitude, habit or thoughts. Think of additional knowledge or skill that you may need to acquire, then go get it.

Reframe the Situation

Look at failure from a different perspective. Consider it as a feedback and a lesson. View the experience as something valuable. You have now an idea of what doesn't work and what should not be done.

Remember Past Successes

Recall all your past successes regardless of how small they were. List them down and acknowledge that you have succeeded many times before. It's helpful if you can identify the common factors that brought about your previous success. Think of what motivated you then and how your thoughts and attitudes were like.

Hang Around Successful People

When you feel down and out, don't look for people who are feeling like you do. Surround yourself and team up with people who are enthusiastic, inspired and optimistic. You will feel the positive energy and it helps you bounce back faster.

Feed Your Mind

Feed your mind with uplifting and positive information. Read inspirational, self help books or biographies and listen to and watch motivational audio and video recordings.

Replace Negative Self Talk

Another tip for overcoming failure is to replace negative self talk with positive affirmations. The negative self talks will make you visualize depressing mental pictures and cause you to feel bad and doubt yourself.

Monitor your emotions because they indicate what you have been thinking. When you are aware of the negative related emotions, pause and ask questions such as "What have I been thinking?" or "What do I want to feel right now?" When you hear the negative self talk, command your mind to stop and affirm positive talks such as "I choose to feel confident" or "I choose to gain control over my thoughts."

Plan a New Strategy

Take a look at your list of goals and check if you were specific and the deadlines were within your reach when you wrote them. Start redefining each goal, revising the deadlines if necessary and making new action plans. List down a list of things to do and take immediate action.

Visualize Success

Recall what you have been picturing or imagining in your mind. If you have been seeing or thinking images of failure, you cannot succeed. To avoid another failure, make it a habit to do visualization exercise daily. You can make use of the Mind Movies vision board software to assist you.

Do More or Take Different Action

Have you done all that you could and done your best? If you have only put in 70%, you'll get the equivalent amount of result. If you want to succeed, put in 100% or more than that. If you have given your best but did not accomplish your goal, do something different. What's important is to develop self discipline and to take consistent positive actions.

Get a Coach or Find a Mentor

Another tip for overcoming failure is to find a mentor or a success coach. He or she will guide you to form success habits and mindset and reduce the risk of failing again.
